First off let me tell you that I'm a musician, which will explain my nebulas of computers. What I'm trying to do is get wireless internet on my desktop. I'm not talking about networking or using a router; it's just my computer in my room with no phone line. My brother mentioned it was possible, however did not go into specifics of how. If you guys can help me out that would be great. Thanks.

You will need an internet connection they can come in many forms... Cable (yes the tv cable), satelite, dsl (phone line). If you dont have one of those (that your paying for) you MAY be able to pick up a city boradband, or a rogue signal from the neighbors. But what you do need is a wireless ethernet card. Do you have one?

If you are in a large city, there may be free wireless available. If not check around with your neighbors, ask if you can use their wireless internet form time to time. An isp will charge about 20-45 USD for the connection.

If you don't want to sign up for your own service, it may be a waste of money. BUT, you can always return the card....

I know there isn't free wireless in my city, and my neighbors most likely wouldn't be down with sharing their network. I don't have cable or satelite, what would be the cheapest option to get my own service? And thanks for the help, I need it.

I'm a little confused on ethernet. It says it is a wired connection, it seems to me you would need something with the ethernet card to connect to internet. Yeah I'm dumb, forgive me.

Ethernet is wired, like a network cord running from the computer to a hub or somthing is wired, but you can also get a wireless one that connect to a router to get internet. If you do decide to get cable, i would reccomend you hooking your computer up close to a cable coaxle so you can go wired, wired is of course faster the Wireless. Then you would plug the cable modem into there and run an ethernet cord from the Modem into the computers ethernet port.

Ok, I think I'm set. I bought a wireless ethernet adapter, and one of my friends I discovered lives close enough so I can use her network.
