Wireless internet

Hey all,

I am thinking of getting a laptop and would like to be able to browse the web wherever I am in the house. I currently have a desktop computer which I shall keep and have a 1mb tiscali internet connection, soon to be upgraded to 2mb.

However I have no idea what sort of equipment I would need and how it would connect all together.

Any ideas gratefully received. :)

You will need a i "Wireless" network card to put into your Desktop PC, and your new laptop will need to have wireless build in otherwise get a "PCMCIA Wireless Card" for it(check first that you have a PCMCIA slot)

You will then also need a "Wireless Router" to act as a Network HUB, and also inorder to share you internet with all of the computers. If you ring your Internet service provider they will have a range of these to chose from and will give you all the instructions on setting it up....however, you may be able to buy one cheaper from a store or online.

Thanks for that.

Is it not possible to have the desktop 'hard wired' for internet with the laptop wireless or is there no point in doing that?

Is it possible to get a wireless network card to be usb connected?

You can have the Desktop hardwired provided the router you buy has ports on it for that and is not just a "wireless router".
The benifits of having it all wireless is that you can then put the wireless router next to where the wall socket for it is... and have the PC anywhere else, without having to run a cable. This does however mean that you have to shell out extra cash for the wireless card when you already have wired.

I personally have not heard of or looked for a USB Wireless Card... however some of the other members may know... or try a Google search

You can get wireless cards connected to the usb port. However they are more expensive so I would probably go down the pcmcia card route.

Are they easy to install into a laptop and desktop computer?

Is there a particular wireless modem you would recommend?
