was playing coling mcrae: Dirt on my xbox,.. suddenly I hear a scratchy sound comming from my xbox. (it was standing there rock solid, couldnt move in any way) I opened the dvd drive, and the disk seemed fine. now it makes a bit of an odd sound when it 'starts' reading a disk, and it wont recognize them (tried dvd's, games and audio cd's)

I bought it 4 weeks ago (well.. 24th last month, over here its 23st now) and I bought it because Halo 3 was released soon then, and the xbox got cheaper at that time. well, great, now it somehow killed itself :( what do you think, would the shop give me a replacement or would I have to wait 5 weeks (or whatever it is) for the shop to get it to microsoft for repairs?

this sucks,.. really :(

Damn, this is not the first time I hear a X-Box 360 dies in the first month... What the hell is wrong with this console?

I mean I have bought a PS2, still working after 5 years of playing, I still have a Sega Megadrive, and I have a WII.. None of them broke. Even my old N64 that I sold to a friend still works fine...

My Dreamcast works fine (I totally forgot about it lol)
Is the problem coming from Microsoft?

How Ironic?

I would call up Microsoft and ask to speak to a supervisor, they usually give you the best support. I would explain my situation with wanting to play Halo 3 and that's why you bought it. I would just pressure them to give me a replacement and 'cross-ship' it. They might need numbers to do this so be ready to look under the Xbox.

Oh, Dreamcast was awesome, I used to play some jet fighter game all the time, it was better than the original Xbox, IMO.

I had one of the Jet games too. Where you just fly around in different cities, with or without other planes... Loved that game!

OOPS Thread stolen :o

This is why I am a PC Gamer.

funny, but the same could have happened with a pc's dvd drive.

well.. gues I'll have to see what the shop keeper says tomorrow.. I really hope they change it.

I've asked specially when i bought it if i could have one made in 2007, because i heard those were the ones where the drive issues had been solved.
then the guy in the shop said they had to send the flawed ones back already, so it was ok, so I got one from week 32 2006 production date.

now I know why there was difference between them, the older ones use a Samsung or a hitachi drive, xbox's made from februairy 2007 use a BenQ drive.
appearantly the BenQ one is much more quiet, faster in reading and guaranteed no scratches on disks. (at least, so far no reports)
I'll tell them that tomorrow, and maybe they will give me the 2007 version then..

I dunno, Samsung is an awesome drive... I have used them in my last three computers without a hitch...

Well, see, if I really wanted to play a game, I could go pick up a DVD drive for 20 bucks and install it myself. If I really wanted to RMA the drive, I could. But I'm not going to be out of an entire system. I'm also not going to void any warranties by opening my computer.

I built the thing myself. If something goes wrong, it is my own damn fault. Even if it isn't (like my PSU taking a dirt-nap), I can still just replace it. I've been out money before (because I don't feel like sitting around while I argue with Newegg over who I need to RMA the part to). I've had bad experiences doing this, but ultimately I've never been out of a computer for weeks and weeks. The worst I've had happen is having my PSU blow out, and I just replaced it with a new one. I was out 100 bucks, but I learned my lesson. I only stick with brands that haven't screwed me over, and I shop locally.

I've never bought a motherboard from anyone other than Asus or MSI. I only buy RAM from Corsair or Patriot. I only use Seagate and Western Digital hard drives. I essentially assess what the high risk parts are, and I buy those locally. Everything else I get on Newegg. I had the southbridge crap out on a motherboard, so I went and returned it at the store. No questions.

So ultimately I'm saying that I never wait for weeks for some corporation to remove their heads from their collective ass. Plus I know like 5 people who have XBox 360 paperweights while they go around and around with Microsoft.

TIP: do what I'm going to do, when your 360 gets back from repair take it to gamestop and trade in for a ps3 (or wii). I'm sick of paying xbox live too, they still just charged me for it and its in getting repaired, WTF! they said i' get a month free two, pff. I'm not going to let myself get F***** in the **S by microsoft anymore, and now i hear the send back other peoples dead xbox's that have been refurbished and they are failing just as easily. I'll play halo 3 when it comes out for pc in 2029.

 omg I hope that doesn't happen to me, I just bought my 360 last weekend. So far it works great, hopefully it doesn't break.

see what i find strange is probably the way the box was manufacture or you guys manhandled it , anyway my frineds xbox 360 (has 2 normal and Elite) works great, no flaws or whatsoever, i play Dirt & Pes 6 all the time, i ain't seeing nothing wrong, eventhough the console has feel to the ground a couple of times

tons of best buy's have there PS3 and 360 dead on the "try it out" area. lol. I was discussing when halo 3 would come out on PC an the ultimate conclusion was that we thought about 1-1.5 years after the 360 version.

Just about everywere i go were they have the ps3 were you can play it... its froze :P. But the Xbox is always fine..

I hope you get it fixed without too much trouble :(

MS will give you no trouble at all to replace your Xbox, it will be completely free of charge.

I got an Xbox 360 Premium 2 weeks after they were first released, and I have not had ANY problems at all. In fact, I left it on by accident last night before I went out at about 7. Got home at 2 and it was still running, no problems at all.

funny tough, the xbox itself is still working fine. I mean, when I open the tray, it says opening on the screen (vice versa with closing) it just gives a odd sound when it attempts to read the disk, and then it says 'open tray' on screen.
well, tomorrow I'll know more. and it isnt a question if MS will replace it, its the question weither the shop where I bought it will replace it. I mean, they are my contact point atm after all, not MS (yet)

Ahh well I wish you the best of luck getting it fixed. I've never had a problem with consoles before... but then again that might be because I've never owned one. :P

Oh jeez, I just bought an xbox360 for halo3 also, I was freaking out reading this thinking "oh crap, what if I purchased an 06?!" Turns out I got an 07, so Im happy. Hope you get your xbox finished in time for halo3 (2 days?!).

oh well.. off to bed now, wish me luck for tomorrow :(

Yea, the BenQ is the best drive for the 360 as of right now. I've had a Samsung in both of mine and both have been loud as hell, but my 360 works at least (knock on wood). Now to go to sleep until 9pm Monday...lol
