xbox 360 network adapter

You'll need a wireless adapter that's 'true plug-n-play', meaning it doesn't require software installation to run properly.

These are generally classified as 'wireless gaming adapters' and can be had for only slightly cheaper than the Microsoft wireless adapter.

I suggest buying the official adapter used at your local game shop.. you can generally find them cheaper there.

I got my official adapter for just a hair over $55USD used :)

I'm quite sure you could go wireless with the previous Xbox using this ethernet to wireless converter. If you look around, you can find some of these for cheap on ebay. Or, you can sometimes find cheaper routers that can run DD-WRT and should allow you to do this. I know the newer Buffalo G-125 goes for about $30 at some places and should work this way... Eh, but read into it first. I've never tried to set mine up in such a way...

The xbox wireless card is not a wireless card. It is actually an ethernet to wireless bridge device, so no drivers are needed because as far as the xbox is concerned it is still using the ethernet port.

Which is why you can't pop in a USB 802.11x WiFi card because it would require drivers to run, where as a bridge device doesn't, because it just bridges the connections together. This technology is bit more expensive so it will naturally cost more. One common bridge device I have used in the past is the aero pad mini, which retails for around $70.00 USD.

I get what your saying apart from

The wireless adapter is USB?

I know the original Xbox adapter was a bridge, and it (or similar devices) should work on the 360 as mentioned. The official adapter for the 360 is USB.
