XBox 360 Pro: My Project

Picked up an XBox 360 Pro for free from my local thrift store, and I'm thinking of fixing it up and selling it. It seems to need an HD, and (thanks PCW) I have all the know-how needed to reprogram the firmware in a WD Scorpio and use that. But what's weird is that where the HD goes there is no HD case, instead in its place is a mesh door that gives the impression that this XBox 360 was sold without an HD. So, my question is, is it worth it to spend $65 USD to buy a 120 GB HD and XBox 360 HD case and fix it up and sell it? Or is it OK without an HD? If so, what would you guys sell it for (with HD/without HD)? MS originally sold it for $250 USD, and the the 120 GB HD upgrade from them is almost $200 USD, so I think $200 USD would be a fair price, giving me $140 in profit...but what are your opinions?

sounds like its an arcade, is the front of the disc tray silver colored?

either way, you won't get anywhere near $200 for it. the old generation xbox's just aren't worth that anymore. because they're plagued with hardware issues, unless it has a warranty with it, the value is going to plummet.

i mean you can buy a brand new slim model for $200.. sure it only has a 4GB HD, but you get my point. bottom line: i'd say it's really not worth buying a hard drive just to resell it. fix it up for fun and to keep it for yourself.

not to mention you can use flash drives as hard drives now, but i ordered a hdd enclosure on ebay from hong kong for like 9 bucks

Sounds like after there system broke they bought an Arcade, and used there old HDD, and put the cover on the old system. You're better off, fixing it like it is a forgetting about the HDD. If you can try picking up an old 20Gb HDD for $25 somewhere. You might get $125 out of the system with an HDD, $100 without it, that is if you have the power cables as well. Although seeing as how it's been broke before that lowers the value a good bit. Not only that, but the older models are in demand. Microsoft will be releasing a 4GB 360 slim for $199 by Christmas. My opinion, fix it and keep it, you will make very little profit if you sell it.

Not sure what I would do with it unless I could put another OS on it, as I'm not a big fan of console gaming. I know for certain that it's a Pro (thanks Wikipedia), it's matte white with a chrome drive door, and was made 2006-ish (from my decodings of mysterious stickers :D). I also need to buy a power cable and A/V cable, possibly a controller, so that's more to spend on it, and I don't even know if it works in the first place :o. But hypothetically, if it does work, and I put a $40 120 GB WD Scorpio in it, I could sell it for $100-150 USD, right? If it is really worth it to keep it, I read it has a 3-core PPC CPU in there with 512 MB RAM, and ATI Xenos GPU, so is it possible to put another OS on there like you can with a PS3? I don't have any games for that platform, and my tiny 10" TV is not the best for my eyes. I dunno what else you can do with it, but I'm open for suggestions.

First thing you should do is fix it. Then if it works decide what you want to do with it. My suggestion is fix it and sell it as is. It will be much more appealing to somebody with a broke system that already has a HDD, cables, controller, games, etc. You could probably get $65-$75 selling it as a barebone system. In then end after buying cables, HDD, controller, and selling it for $150 you're probably going to make about the same profit.
