Yet Another Frickin' Game that won't open.

I can't open FS X because of a 'Side By Side' error. I can''t open Just Cause 2 because of a 'Group Policy' error. I brought home BioSchock 1 tonight on disc and can't open it because of Parental Controls. When I go to my Control Panel to open Parental Controls all that happens is a window asking if I want to allow Parental Controls to make changes to my computer. Whether I press Yes or No at that point, nothing happens either way. I can't open Parental Controls. I can't open about 30% of the games I've paid for. Edit, actually 40% since I wasn't able to Download Dragon Age from Gamestop after paying for it.

I've disabled Parental Controls in MSConfig and that hasn't fixed anything. What's the point of a $400 Graphics card if you can't open half your games?

Run the system file checker, you may have corrupted system files. Click start, in the search box type sfc /scannow, hit enter. You may need the operating system install cd.

johnb35 , Thank you for the response. I definitely have the sense that Windows isn't operating quite right. I searched for sfc /scannow and it flashes a window for a moment which disappears before I can read anything.

I expect I'll be doing a reinstall, which I haven't done before as this is my first build.

Reinstall fixes everything (except hardware) you will be a much happier camper with a fresh os. Also, after you reinstall, be sure to clone the disk and get some maintenance software to run periodically

I just discovered the list of freeware that Aastii was good enough to compile. I'll be looking that over for things like Avast and Defraggler. Any Others that would be good recommendations?

ccleaner, run it every few weeks so you don't build up loads of temporary files, internet files, cookies etc...

I would also get ad-aware and/or spybot S&D to get rid of any other stuff that may be in your system periodically

Well,

I've reinstalled. Media Player is working again which is nice. Also, I was able to install Photoshop Elements where I couldn't before, which is nice. I managed to connect to Gamestops's DL Manager so it looks like I'll get that copy of Dragon Age for $15 after all. Again, Nice.

FSX still is posting a 'Side by side' error. I had had been using that game for awhile before I started getting that error.

All in all I'd say I made progress tonight though there are still some things to figure out. Thanks for the help and any more advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again Aastii

Did a second reinstall. The second time around I went with the beefier 'custom' install that seems to have taken just about everything off of my Harddrive, files programs and all. I've spent most of my day DLing and reinstalling but I am absolutely error free and able to run everything that I would have hoped for.

It's a good feeling and I'm back to likeing my Rig. Thanks all for the feedback in the thread. :)
