Hello again guys. I'm back, and need help please. :(

Am suffering from "Spyware Strike 2.5" and "PestTrap". My broadband wasn't connecting at all yesterday, but Ewido found and deleted 8 infected items.
Oh, and is Firefox 1.5.0.2 update genuine?

Thanks for any help you give me - you all deserve medals!

Firefox is on version 1.5.0.2.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Run a full scan with Ewido, then restart the computer and post a new Hijackthis log.

Thanks Buzz - unfortunately a message come up when I click on smitfraudfix.cmd saying:

Process.exe file missing!
Unzip all the archive in a folder.
Press any key to continue...

But there IS a Process.exe file...

Buzz1927

Digaredd
That's odd. Never mind, this way takes longer but it'll still get it.

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Security Suite:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp412.tmp
O3 - Toolbar: MSN - {BDAD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - C:\Program Files\MSN Apps\MSN Toolbar\01.02.4000.1001\en-gb\msntb.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpywareStrike] C:\Program Files\SpywareStrike\SpywareStrike.exe /h

Close any open windows and hit "Fix checked".

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Now open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Select "Remove" and "Perform action on all Infections" and "Create encrypted backup".
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Close Ewido

Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Finally, restart your computer once more and post a new Hijackthis log.

Delete all the files with "not disinfected" (but not nailfix or smitrem).

Download: CCleaner (freeware)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
Once installed, run CCleaner click the Windows [tab]
Select the following:
cleaner.gif

Next: click Options click the Advancedtab.
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit

All done Buzz. Did the CCleaner wipe the "not disinfected" files, or was I supposed to use another program?

BTW, SpywareStrike 2.5 is still about

Cheers

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Then reboot and post a new Hijackthis log.

Off Topic, don't want to hijack this.

I feel sorry for you. I know how frustrating this is, and how much time it takes to dig all that junk out of your computer and fix it.

Good luck. I hope you can get it fixed.

A little trick I've found is to run Vector Linux Kill Bill Edition off a live CD. You can run AdAware through WINE really easily and kill all those extra-nasty spywares that put themselves back in as soon as you take them out. Think Safe Mode v2.0.

Thanks for the sympathy/help guys...it's been a long war already.
BTW, where can I get hold of this Vector Linux Kill Bill Edition off a live CD, and what is AdAware?
Cheers
