I get what you are saying, I have yet to upgrade my server from 14.04 to 16.04 as for the time being I don't see much of a point for my needs. Just can't justify the work of data moving for a newer server OS while 14.04 is supported until 2019.
Okay, I would love to help you with your issue, looks like you get the error when running updates? If yes I need you to run your updates differently so we can see what is happening. Instead of using the GUI open the terminal and run
sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade;
Post the output for me please, this way we can see what package is failing and why.
One other question for the Radeon piece, are you using the proprietary or open source drivers?
