9800GTX+ vs. 8800GT?

Whoa, I just read in another thread that an 8800GT is better than a 9800GT?

I thought that the 9800GT was better, since the 9x series is "newer" than the 8x series? How is this possible?

So, how is a 9800GTX+ vs an 8800GTX+ then?
What's going on here? I just bought a 9800GTX+ thinking it was better than the 8x series...the 8x series is cheaper isn't it?

Firstly, DW. 9800GTX+ is a great card, in general the best out of all 8- and 9-series cards.

The 8-to-9 transition largely consisted of rebranding cards. 9800GT is essentially the same as 8800GT (certainly not worse). Not sure about 8800GTX+ and 9800GTX+, but AFAIK the 9800GTX+ is built on a newer manufacturing process (55nm) and it should outperform the 8800GTX+. Even if not, the 9800GTX+ certainly wasn't a bad choice so just chill and smile.

I was readong about this a while ago. Theres no such thing as an 8800GTX+ btw. It can be confusing but essentially a 9800GT (baseline) is a re-badged 8800GTX with a few tweaks like clock etc. Just remember a 9800 will always be better than an 8800GT. The best 8800 was the 8800ultra while the best 9800 is the current 9800GTX+ which has blazing clock speeds compared to anything else on the market at this point in time besides the GTX260 and up.

Basically the 9800GTX+ is the best graphics card on the market besides nVidia GTX260, 280, 295, and ATI 4870.

One more thing is theres a strange card called the 9800GX2 which is amazing and i wish i had one... its a 9800 with 2 cores in one card! Its like SLI in just one card..amazing.

Anyway , post your thoughts and good luck

9800GT and 8800GT are essentially the same card, hardware wise. They touched up on some Hybrid SLI stuff and gave it a fancy new name. They have the same core clocks, memory clocks, architecture, everything. It also depends on the clock speed of the card. I had my card overclocked to 740MHz at one point and I was getting the same frames as my friend with a 9800GTX.

So to answer your question, newer does not always mean better. The 9500GT is newer than the 8800GT but the 8800GT is way better. In your case, the 9800GTX+ is better than the 8800GT. And yes, there is no such thing as an 8800GTX+.

dude, youve asked the same thing over and over.

1st off, do some proper research. If you did, you would see that there is no such thing as a 8800GTX+...

2nd, Learn to read. He has the 8800GTS 640Mb, and that is a crap card. The 8800GTS 512 is better that it just cause its based on newer architecture...

3rd To the guy who recommends teh GX2... its a terrible card... lots of issues...

4th 9800GTX+ is the best card besided the GTX2xx cards and ATI 4870
