Advice on a new card

I have £400 to spend on a new graphics card, I will be using a XFX 780i motherboard with a Q6600.

So I was thinking of either:

9800GTX x1
9800GTX x2 to run in sli (heard two 9800's run better than one 9800GX2?) (Also to possibly buy another 9800GTX for tri sli)
9800GX2 x1 and another 9800GX2 in future when prices drop for Quad sli.
8600GT x1 for £40 (cheap card) and wait for the 9900 series.
Or anything else you can think of.

Gee you have so much money to burn. If money is no object, then I would say, get the best and fastest. Get the 9800 GTX x3 and let it rip. Word of caution though, you have to overclock your Q6600 otherwise it will be the bottleneck of your system restricting the performance of your graphics card. I have single 512MB 8800GTS and I have found that my CPU was limiting it at stock speeds. So be prepared to overclock it to 3.4GHz like me :D, you should be able to achieve that easily, you live in Leeds, way colder than Sydney. :D

haha thanks, but should I wait for the 9900GTX or 9900GX2 rumoured in July? rather than the 9800GX2? Or wont there be much difference...?

i would say wait and see about the 9900's, i was on wikipedia the other day, and i saw some rumored specs in terms of the data transfer rate, and the 9900 gtx had a rumored transfer rate of 180.6 gb/s, otherwise tri sli with 9800 gtx's, they are better than quad sli

If I am buying a 9900 series card I need something to keep me going until then.

Do I keep my 8800 ultra and hope I can get £200 for it in a few months.

Sell my 8800 ultra and buy a 9800GTX or 9800GX2 and hope I can get a good price back for them in a few months?

Another words which will hold its value? 8800 Ultra, 9800GTX or 9800GX2?

9800GTX will surely hold its value for longer than the 8800 Ultra.

But, if your thinking of tri-sli with 3x 9800GTX, you really don't need to wait for the 9900 series. Your already set for years with 3 of those :l

Quad SLI is way way way way way way way way way awy awyawyyawy too expensive for just a couple of frames more then normal SLI (or Tri-SLI) seeing Quad SLI won't do very well just yet (might even do worse in some cases). Only in intensive software like 3Dmark you might see a positive difference... And I am sure that a Q6600 will be a bottleneck for 4 GPU's...

If you want super performance go for Tri SLI with 9800GTX's, but if you put two in Dual SLI it will perform better then practically all your friends computers and run Crysis on ridiculously high settings.

I've just been offered a Gigabyte 9800GTX and £80 for one of my Ultras, what you think?
