any help? Trojan-Downloader.JS.DarDuk.x

So it seems my computer has a virus (not the one I'm posting this on). I have Kaspersky Internet Security installed, and I'm fairly certain it's not out of date, but regardless of this I seem to have gotten a virus (I'm thinking it could be from a Skyrim mod I downloaded, but I doubt it makes a difference). I know next to nothing about computer viruses/trojans and the like, so I'm pretty much helpless as to what I can do about it. The internet on the affected computer isn't working, system restore doesn't work either, and I'm not entirely sure what I can do about it.

Would anyone here know what this trojan is, and more importantly, how to get rid of/stop/quarantine it? Much thanks if you can help! As I said above, I'm incredibly inexperienced with viruses, so I'm at a bit of a loss.

Edit: It seems I'll have to go for the night, I hope my thread doesn't die out pitifully while I'm asleep...

First, I would need to know the exact issues you are having. Are they fake security software windows popping up saying you are infected? What operating system are you running? Do you have a usb flash drive available? Have you tried booting to safe mode to see if internet works? What i'm getting at here is this, I need to know what you can do and not do, so we can do this. See if you can boot to safe mode and get internet so malwarebytes will update. If not, then you will have to download these programs and put them on a usb flash drive or burn them to a cd and install them on the infected computer, however malwarebytes won't update if no internet.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

As far as I can tell there are no fake windows popping up, but there are tons of Kaspersky notification alerts that continue to pop up. I'm not entirely sure if those are fake or not? I'm running Windows 7, and I have several usb flashdrives avaliable. I'm not at home at the moment, but when I get home I'll try to restart my computer and see if I can boot it in safe mode and get the internet to work. Then I'll follow the steps you listed and I'll post the logfile. Thanks for all the help so far!

I dont like interjecting when John is on the case but one small point.

This "virus" has possibly put a proxy on your internet connection.

Open Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings and if there is a tick in the "Use a proxy server for your LAN", remove it and you should be able to connect to the net.

@GaryCantley: I opened my browser and found what you were talking about, but it wasn't checked, so I don't think that's it.

@johnb35: It's giving me notifications such as "Attention! Black list of key files is missing or corrupted. Please run the update to continue operation." and "Databases are corrupted" popups. Also, one that says the license expires in 338 days, and I should renew the license to keep my protection up to date and all. It looks fairly legitimate though, I must say.

I've put Malwarebytes on the computer via flashdrive and it seems that the internet is working now, so that's good. I was able to update to the lastest version.

This is the logfile for Malwarebytes:

Also, HijackThis didn't really work, when I choose "Do a system scan and save a logfile" it says "for some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this." as well as some stuff on editing the file yourself below it. Is that a big problem or is it not as big of a deal? And once again, (I can't overstate this enough,) but thank you for helping me out with this.

Right click on the hijackthis icon and click on run as. If the run as option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on the icon.

Please do the following.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
  • Download this file here :

    Combofix

  • When the page loads click on the blue combofix download link next to the BleepingComputer Mirror.
  • Save the file to your windows desktop. The combofix icon will look like this when it has downloaded to your desktop.

    cf-icon.jpg
  • We are almost ready to start ComboFix, but before we do so, we need to take some preventative measures so that there are no conflicts with other programs when running ComboFix. At this point you should do the following:

  • Close all open Windows including this one.
  • Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Instructions on disabling these type of programs can be found here.
    Once these two steps have been completed, double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all. The scan could take a while, so please be patient.
  • Please click on I agree on the disclaimer window.
  • ComboFix will now install itself on to your computer. When it is done, a blue screen will appear as shown below.

  • ComboFix is now preparing to run. When it has finished ComboFix will automatically attempt to create a System Restore point so that if any problems occur while using the program you can restore back to your previous configuration. When ComboFix has finished creating the restore point, it will then backup your Windows Registry as shown in the image below.

    erunt.jpg

  • Once the Windows Registry has finished being backed up, ComboFix will attempt to detect if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed. If you already have it installed, you can skip to this section and continue reading. Otherwise you will see the following message as shown below:

    recovery-console-prompt.jpg

  • At the above message box, please click on the Yes button in order for ComboFix to continue. Please follow the steps and instructions given by ComboFix in order to finish the installation of the Recovery Console.
  • Please click on yes in the next window to continue scanning for malware.
  • ComboFix will now disconnect your computer from the Internet, so do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet. When ComboFix has finished it will automatically restore your Internet connection.
  • ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
  • While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to their previous settings. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan. An example of this can be seen below.

    still-scanning-clockchanges.jpg

  • When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report.
  • This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
  • When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically for you.
  • Now you just click on the edit menu and click on select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Then come to the forum in your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

However, it seems there's another problem. Literally any time I try to open anything on the computer, be it a browser or Windows Media Player or HijackThis, every single time it comes up with the error saying "C:/Program Files...(continues on saying location of program)... Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." It says this no matter what I'm trying to open, even if I try to open a folder. Should this be happening (I'd guess it shouldn't be), and how can I try to fix this? I can still open my folders and everything, but that's the extent of what I can open as far as I've figured out so far.

Sometimes that happens and all that is needed is to reboot the system and it will be back to normal. I need you to post a log that combofix created but didn't automatically show us. Please navigate to C:\Qoobox and in that folder will be a file named add-remove programs.txt. Please open that file and copy and paste the contents back here.

I believe you have 2 different versions of kaspersky installed or its possible one wasn't fully removed as combofix lists 2 of each of the antivirus, spyware and firewall programs. I would expect this because one of each of the antivirus and spyware entries says disabled/Outdated.

AV: Kaspersky Internet Security *Disabled/Outdated* {56547CC9-C9B2-849D-8FEF-A496150D6A06}
AV: Kaspersky Internet Security *Disabled/Updated* {AE1D740B-8F0F-D137-211D-873D44B3F4AE}
FW: Kaspersky Internet Security *Disabled* {6E6FFDEC-83DD-85C5-A4B0-0DA3EBDE2D7D}
FW: Kaspersky Internet Security *Disabled* {9626F52E-C560-D06F-0A42-2E08BA60B3D5}
SP: Kaspersky Internet Security *Disabled/Outdated* {ED359D2D-EF88-8B13-B55F-9FE46E8A20BB}
SP: Kaspersky Internet Security *Disabled/Updated* {157C95EF-A935-DEB9-1BAD-BC4F3F34BE13}

Once I get a list of installed programs we can go from there.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, I've been a bit bogged down with schoolwork this week. Also, now that I've restarted the computer the programs can open now, so at least that part seems to be solved. Everything seems to be back up and working now, and as far as I can tell it seems back to normal.

To uninstall the programs, is all I have to do just to go into HijackThis and fix said entries that you listed? Or should I use the uninstaller for each one of them (i.e. for Soft32 Updater there's a file called "Uninstall Soft32 Updater") and then do the HijackThis run?

No, to uninstall the programs, go into contro panel, programs, and thats where you uninstall them. Then run hijackthis to get rid of those entries.

When trying to uninstall StartNow Toolbar, and error message pops up saying "An error occured while trying to uninstall StartNow Toolbar. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove StartNow Toolbar from the Programs and Features list?" Should I just hit Yes and leave it at that, or is there something else I'll have to do? The same thing occurs with Shop To Win. When I search in the start menu for anything with the name StartNow Toolbar, nothing comes up, but when I search for Shop To Win there are still several files that come up.

So now I'm on to the HijackThis step, but when I'm looking for this selection box (O3 - Toolbar: MediaBar - {d48c9ead-f59f-4dea-ac97-7065fea79f42} - C:\PROGRA~2\SHAREA~1\MediaBar\Datamngr\ToolBar\shd txmltbpi.dll) it's not there to select. Same thing with O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Soft32 Updater.exe] C:\Users\Bennett\AppData\Local\Soft32\Soft32 Updater\Soft32 Updater.exe /SILENT.
