Hey guys. It's been a looooooooooooooooooooong time since i posted here. I am in need of some major assistance.

So my desktop computer finally quit working on me a few months ago.. What a bummer; all my pics, music and other important crap is on there.:( I'm pretty sure its the mobo but anyway I am gonna start over and build a new one from scratch since I can't find a replacement one.

I have really not been keeping up with the times on computer hardware and there is so much new stuff since i last shopped on newegg.com. Can someone please recommend some components to fit my needs???

First, the HD with all my important files on it is a SATA 120GB. It didn't have my OS on it so I should be able to reuse it in my new build. I also want a new drive for the OS.

Other than that, I'm looking for some components that will be good for mostly web browsing. I will also be recording music on it, but not with any fancy software so I don't think that would be a big issue. I do have some games and am looking to upgrade my graphics card. I just want something that is an upgrade to my AGP 6600GT. I'm sure almost any card will be an upgrade from that and all I want to do is run some of the games that I'm running now with the 6600.

I already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I could reuse my case, but I'm not really attached to it so it could go if it has to. It's an NZXT Guardian. So I pretty much need everything else. Ram, CPU, mobo, heatsink, fans, graphics card, etc. I just want to make sure everything meshes together, and its hard for me to find all these things when I don't have the product knowledge I once had. I'm not too worried about a CD/DVD drive or HD. I can pick those out on my own.

So I would like to keep my budget at about $700 for the whole thing.

One more question. Is Vista worth the upgrade from XP? I don't really care about how it looks, I just want to know about what Vista has that XP doesn't.

Sorry if this is too much for one post.....Feel free to answer just a part of it if you have any input. Thanks in advance.......I know you guys know your stuff!!:)

As far as the hard drive you have with all the information...that's easy...once you get the new rig up and running just plug it into an empty SATA port on your new motherboard and it will be right there.

With a budget of $700 for just a tower...you'll have a nice rig. I am not too familiar with AMD processors but they are the new price:performance champs right now. Many people are running them and are very happy:)

Case and motherboard combo for $115
Antec 300 and GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 AM2+

PSU: OCZ StealthXStream 700W for $80 ($60 after rebate) It is an overkill but the price is good!

Processor: AMD Phenom 9950 Agena 2.6GHz Quad for $150

Ram: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) for $55

Graphics card: HIS HD 4850 for $135

Western Digital Caviar Black for $75

Can you still use your old CD/DVD drive?

This is just to give you an idea...:D

Thanks for the quick reply scout.:)

This definitely gives me some good ideas, but a few questions first. I have never heard of the graphics card or the company who makes it. Is it a good card? The motherboard and case look really good to me. The HD looks sweet, but don't know if I will need all that space. I have a 120GB now and don't even use 1/2 of it. Looks like it would be fast though with the large cache size and what-not. Could probably go for one around 300GB if there is a significant price drop. The processor seems like overkill too. Is a quad core that much faster than a dual core when all I will be doing is some browsing and music and stuff? Also you said the PSU is overkill, so how much power do you think it would take to power a rig like you spec'ed? I can use my CD/DVD drive, but might get another one just to have two.

Thanks.:)
