Best way to password protect external media

As the title says what is the best way to encrypt/password protect usb flash drives and cd/dvd's?

Anyone had any expirence with truecrypt or cryptainer LE?

And it needs to be 1000000000% compatibile with windows xp, vista and 7.

Truecrypt has been very reliable for me on a USB flash drive across multiple Microsoft operating systems. One caveat is that you'll need administrator privileges on all machines to be able to install Truecrypt initially. Can't comment on cryptainer LE.
