Building a new Computer

So, I'm a gamer. So far I've been primarily a console gamer, but lately I've been interested in getting into computer gaming. Since my old laptop probably won't cut it, I've been thinking about building a computer, which as a bonus sounds like fun. However, I know absolutely nothing about computers. But after researching the topic for a while I did get to know the most basic, and I've been looking at some components coming up with this list:

Total Price: $1,639.19

But, before spending a lot of money on this, I'd like to have someone who knows something about computers take a look at it and see if I've made some horrible mistakes. And that's how I found this forum. Please tell me what you think.

Also, I am willing to spend quite a bit, but if there's anything you guys think is an unnecessary investment I'll cut it.

Its a good thing you confirmed your build otherwise you would have ended up with a wrong CPU/MOBO.
Better to go with a sandy bridge build for now, since there won't be any processors coming out for the 1366.
Since you have already chosen a sandy bridge supporting motherboard ie the P67 then you just need to change your CPU to this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

The above processor will perform better in gaming than the processor which you selected.

This set of memory is nice
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220561
And after rebate $55
And also it has a better Latency. :D
And I would go with this GPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121429
It has a better HSF. :D

+1 to mihir's suggestions. I would make 2 more:

Get a better PSU. 650W will work but for the purpose of future upgrading, (and because it seems like you have the money) a more powerful one will do you good.

Also, get a second hard drive. Doesn't need to be anywhere near a terabyte but it's good to have your OS and programs on on drive and your files (music, videos, pictures, etc.) on another. Not only does your computer stay faster, but if you ever have to re-format you don't have to worry about moving your files around.

Last but not least you'll need to throw in an OS to the final price, unless you plan on using Linux.......which I doubt.

Hey, thanks a lot for your reply. Unfortunantly, I found out that Newegg doesn't ship to my area, so I made a new list with stuff from Amazon. Sorry for wasting your time. The updated list is in the original post.

Your main concern now is that you have no processor so your PC may not work properly..

Try Tigerdirect and maybe Troncoso can tell you more trustworthy computer retailers.
If none of them deliver then we can make a list from amazon

Oh, sorry, forgot to add that to my list. Fixed now.

I think I'll go with Amazon.

Really if you'd like to save money the i5 2500k is almost just as fast, minimal difference and not going to notice it in anything really other than benches, and the k alows for overclocking later on, and i'd get a 1tb caviar blu and take the money saved and get a ssd to boot off of and put anything that you use all the time, mabey 1 or 2 games you play the most, and they will launch in no time ot all.

What does the K mean? Otherwise its seems identical to the one I have.

Unlocked multiplier,if you are overclocking or plan to do in the future then get any Sandy Bridge CPU with a K at the end of the model.

And I think you should stick to a 2500k since the 2600k is overkill for gaming, and for gaming purposes there is not much of a difference performance wise between the two CPUs.

here is a sample build

Intel Core i5 2500k
A Z68/P67 Motherboard
8GB 2x4GB DDR3 1600Mhz with a latency of 8.
A GTX 580 with a non-stock design HSF, even though I would suggest getting a GTX570 which is alot cheaper than the GTX 580, and the GTX 570 is only like 12-14% faster than that which will give you a jump of 6-8fps in games.
So I do not think spending 150 bucks for 6-8fps is justified but it is completely your choice I am just keeping the facts in front of you.
An XFX/Silverstone/Seasonic/Antec/Corsair PSU >= 550W. A 550W Would do the job nicely but if you want more it wouldn't hurt to get more, if you plan a multi GPU config in the future or add a physx card etc etc.
A Full/Mid ATX case which has a nice airflow like the HAF 932. You can also have a look at cases from corsair they are brilliant.
A SATA 6GBps HDD.
And also an SSD of 64Gb for the OS.

And if you plan on overclocking a nice HSF.

I hate to tell ya, but you left out the Operating System, so add $100 to your total price, and after tax+s&h, add another $100, this puts the build at just under $1500 ;)

So with a $1500 build in mind, check this out:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=24122028
--Total(tax+sh): $1525.05

This is about the best computer you can build within your budget, with a few exceptions. You can save $100 and get a GTX 570 and add an SSD to your build. Do some research on SSD's and see if it's something you want/worth downgrading the GTX 580 for. The type of improvements you see with an SSD are 15-25 second boot times and games/programs loading much faster. Because of the smaller storage capacity of SSD's, you use them in conjunction with a larger HDD.

Same build, but with a GTX 570 + SSD:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=20904107
--Total(tax+sh): $1502.91

If you plan on doing any overclocking in the futue, you need a good air cooler. The best atm is the Noctua NH-D14($80)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018&Tpk=d14

If all of this is way out of your price range, let me know, and I'll see what I can put together :)

Yeah, I saw that right AFTER I made my post :p Well, once he figures out where he's buying from, he can use the lists as a reference for parts :good:
