Well let me tell you wha I have currently and what I would like to do.
Current system:
Asus P5B-deluxe
Intel E6400
2GB corsair XMS
1x raptor 150gb
1x Seagate 250gb 7200.10
ATI X1900XT

I will be getting some extra money by monday and I would like to A, build a complete new system. B, buy a pre-made (alienware, dell XPS, MacPro)
Yes I did put mac in there as Ive always wanted to try one but could never afford one.
OK Im sure your first question will be "Whats my budget" so I will get that out of the way now. I have 20k but sure as hell do not want to spend all that on a computer (I do have some other bills to pay lol).
Lets say 5k and work from there if it cheaper great if its a little over budget no biggie. OK Guru have at it.

great build, mine wouldnt be much different. id say just go with one 8800 as two is not needed yet, then put that money into a nice new monitor or something.

Omg lol you wouldnt seriusly waste nearly $1000 on a Processor?
Yeah its a good one but $1000:eek:

Your system looks great as it is....Yeah maybe get a new Gfx card the 8800 like its been mentioned and maybe a nice big Lcd monitor.

Just save the rest for a later date:p

think nevakonza would be right to be honest, we know how often technology changes and there are a few ideas on the horizon for later in the year.

Your best bet would be to upgrade what you have, pop in a 8800 as mentioned before, maybe up the procesor a bit but to be fair the 6400 would probably do everything you need. Just tweak what you already have for a fraction of the cost.

Then either save the rest for later in the year for a possible new system, or get the mac your after, that way you have both, a really nice desktop pc and a mac at the same time, all for probably less than $5k.

Buidling a new system when your current one is already towards the top end seems unnecessary to me.

And the build above will not be probably be near obselete within 3 years...such is the technological revolution :)

I agree, if you buy an 8800GTX to go along with your system, you will be able to play any games maxed out at practically any resolution capable on a 24" LCD. You can also look into overclocking your current CPU and RAM to get more performance out of your system.

^ the system i wrote up owns that to the max, but after i wrote it i saw your current system, which is awesome. i mean why the heck would you spend 5k after you built that like, what, 6 months ago?? and its awesome too

you build owns the mac to the max?

errr ok...........

anyways, as stated he is interested in getting a mac, always wanted one so a mac plus his old system tweaked is less than $5k and would give him the best of both worlds.

Seeing what you already have, just pop a E6600 in it. Definitely upgrade to a 8800GTX.

Go out and play with a mac cause they don't live up to their reputation all the time. I'm allowed to speak, i'm on a mac laptop right now. It's not as great at multitasking as everyone says they are, but they are better than most pc's at it.

I've played games on mac desktops and many, many pc's. A pc that is mid-level is almost better than many mac desktops.

@joe
Your system will definitely not last 5-6 years.
The R600 is supposed to come out Jan 20-25, around there. It's better than the 8800GTX. Depending on what size monitor and what resolution you use, it might be unnecessary to get 2 8800gtx.

5-6 years with 2 8800GTXs in SLI and 2 150GB raptors at 10k in RAID0, i think it has a pretty good chance of lasting a long while

I dont really need to upgrade the only game I play is WOW and sometimes COD2, I have a sony 24" CRT and I can play both them games maxed out at 1920x1200 no problem at all. I guess you could call me a upgrade junkie LOL! like most of us here im sure.
I really like the idea of just getting a 8800 and 1 more raptor 150gb for the raid 0 and then getting a MAC. I did stop by a apple store to look at the macpro desktop w/ 30" LCD (damn that screen is huge) and they are really cool for what ive seen, and with bootcamp its best of both worlds for what i see.
OH also can someone pick out a really good LCD for me, I have no clue what I good LCD is for gaming, atleast 24" maybe 30" hehe. I did see a acer 26" and was wanting your guys opinion on it?
Thanks guys for your help really apperciate it.

But if you really think about it, spending that much right now is pointless seeing as how nothing takes advantage of it. I mean a single 8800GTS can play anything maxed out now.

In a year from now, you could but a single card for probably $200 thats better then 2x 8800GTX's in SLI, and hard drives will have turned into hybrid drives that are part flash memory.

By spending so much money on the top of the line now, is completely pointless. Just buy an E6600, 8800GTS, 2GB RAM, 10K Raptor HD, and then upgrade later down the road. You will save soo much more money.
