im looking into getting the phenom 9950 BE.

im running the 9600 x4 am2+. is swapping chip for chip jsut pulling out the old in with the new and boot up. nothing needs to be done with windows or anything. bios will take care of it all.

I never did a swap after build. microcenter by me has the chip for 139.99.

my mobo supports the 140w cpu. and both chips say am2+

Wow, for that price, you can get the AMD Phenom II x4 940, which is newer, faster, and 45nm technology. It should also fit in your motherboard since it fits in as AM2+.

Please be smart with this decision to swap processors and dish out the little extra money to buy the 940, because it is such a better buy, and greatly better/new/improved [45nm] technology.

You might actually need to update the bios to run the Phenom II but the P2 is greatly superior to the P1 and only costs a little more so i'd do it. Oh and if you plan on upgrading to a AM3 socket for ddr3 support in the future then i'd suggest getting the AM3 Phenom II's as they are compatible with AM2+ as well as the new AM3 sockets.

However the better value is the AM2+ P2's because DDR3 isn't too big a difference from DDR2.

im downloading the newest bios version which is dates 2009/01/19 verions 801.

would be updating bios now with cpu i got in now affect anything besides fix the bugs. so then when i get new cpu all id have to do is reset cmos and pop in new cpu.

the bios i downlaoded was a ROM file 640kb. so how would i go about making that bootable onto cd so i can update

Yes once you update your motherboard's BIOS you'll definitely be able to run a Phenom II with ease. :) Good job man...get the Phenom II 920 or the 940...920 is the better buy really since you can always overclock it with ease anyway.

Edit: Holy crap newegg jacked the price of the 920 from $179.99 to $226.99 making it only like $3 cheaper than the 940!?
Check out eBay really...you may find it cheaper, or microcenter.
