Gtx 570

So after a few weeks of looking up benchmarks and reviews of the GTX 460, GTX 470, and Radeon 5850, I finally decided on going for the GTX 470.

Now I read that NVidia will be releasing the GTX 570 soon. It will have the same number of SPs as the GTX 480, but will run much cooler and will probably be cheaper. I probably won't have the money for it, and probably don't need the performance over the 470, but I was curious if anyone had a prediction or read about what this would do to the price of the 470 based off past releases. I've kinda been out of the loop with prices lately, been way too busy with school. Thanks!

Well I certainly wouldn't buy a GTX470 at this point. The GTX560 will be your best option, which is an Unlocked gtx460. It's what should have been released as the gtx475.

I believe the GTX560 will be in the $260 range.

The GTX 560 won't be out for a while will it? I heard the 570 is coming out this December, but haven't heard about the 560 yet. I was hoping to pick up the 470 on Black Friday if I can find a good sale. I'm not going to be too picky about performance, as the 470 is already a huge improvement compared to what I have now.

If I bought the EVGA GTX 470 would I be able to participate in the step-up program whenever the 560/570 comes out? I don't know a whole lot about how that works.

So, I don't mean to change the topic of this thread, but I'm having second thoughts on the 470. After looking through the Black Friday sales on NewEgg, I found the 5850's are actually cheaper than the 470s now.

I was looking at this one specifically, to match the color theme of my case :p

I was honestly going for The GTX 470 because of CUDA and PhysX, but do you think this justifies going with NVidia? I just got the i5-760 on sale and was probably going to OC to ~3.4GHz, so would I really even need a video card that supports these features?

And considering the 5850 runs cooler and consumes less power than the 470, I probably wouldn't need to upgrade to the 500 series once it comes out, solving my initial problem. Sorry for all the questions, but I'm hoping to finish buying all my parts this week and am trying to be cautious with my money. Haha

Dude just get a 460 1gb. A small overclock and it's easily as strong as a 470, and they are only ~$200-220.

All gtx460's can do 800mhz core clock on stock volts, mine does 850 on stock and 910 on max capped voltage which is only a .0875v increase over stock. 800 core clock on a 460 1gb is easily as strong as a 470.

Here- super clocked lifetime warranty EVGA gtx460 1gb EE for $200 shipped plus $20 MIR-

I agree. The 460 is beast when it comes to price/performance, and it's also beast when it comes to performance in general! If it's between the 470 and the 5850, I would have to say 5850. Cooler and roughly the same speed (I think).

Honestly, what was your deciding factor to go with a 470 over a 460?

Most people don't understand when they look at benches, the reference gtx460 is seriously detuned at only 675mhz core clock. At 800mhz core clock, they are a whole new beast.

Yes they are.

But before you were demanding benchmarks of me proving that an overclocked GTX 460 1Gb could beat a GTX 470 :p

Either way, the 460 and 470 are good cards.

OP: How many PCI-E connectors does your PSU have? the 460 requires 2x6. I think the 470 needs 1x6 and 1x8

I agree that the 460 has a better price/performance ratio but I decided on the 470/5850 just in terms of performance. My computer now is around 4 years old and I wanted to go all out on this build, so I wanted to get a video card that I wouldn't have to upgrade later. Then again, I'm going from an 8800GT so I guess I can't be too picky right? :p

Yeah, I guess I could consider the 460 as well. But between the 470 and the 5850, the only pro to me for the 470 is that it has CUDA and PhysX. If I got a fast processor, would I really see benefits to GPU PhysX? My CPU should be able to handle all of that work right? Thanks again for all the input

Not many games use PhysX at all.

But if you are looking at $270 GPU's, why not get a 6870???

What resolution are you gaming at? If it's the 1680x1050 monitor in your sig, honestly you could throw any viewing settings you want at a stock gtx460 768mb and it would not hiccup at that resolution...let alone a 1gb overclocked. The 1gb gtx460 overclocked will give you more futureproofing though.

Well, it's more the performance I'm looking for, not necessarily the best card I can buy for $270. I'm really looking forward to being able to run Crysis 2 when it comes out, so if you're fairly confident it should run on high settings with AA at 1920x1200, I'll gladly take the GTX 460 if it's only $180. This build is coming out to be around $1200 so I'll gladly cut back a bit to save money wherever I can.

I just bought the Corsair 750TX, which has 4 2+6 pin connectors. I'm not sure if this would be enough to do 2 460's in SLI, though. I suppose I could just buy a second 460 when Crysis 2 comes out.

It's plenty of PSU to do SLI'd 460's.

THe monitor in your sig is 1680x1050, which would no problem at all. One 460 may struggle on some extremely graphically intense games with high settings at 1920x1200, but so would a 470 or a 5850. A single 460 now with future upgrade to SLI'd 460's seems like a good route for you.
OR, as long as you get the lifetime warranty card I linked too, if the gtx570 comes out soon you could step up too. Just another option.

Yeah, the monitor in my sig has a res of 1680x1050, but I'm also buying a new monitor. I found a Black Friday deal for a 23" 1080p for $150, so I'm just planning ahead :p

I guess I'll go with the 460

Especially considering what I'm coming from, I guess I won't really be complaining about any performance issues with the card, haha. Thanks for all the help!

Cool, I run 1080p too on my 460 and everything runs flawless.
