Hard Drive Size not as mention

I recentely bought a new external hard drive it say 400 GB when I connecte to my computer windows xp pro and install the driver it show me only 372 GB , so know that each GB is equal to 1024 MB does that is the reason and how could I loose 28 GB of hard drive size ?

It's because the harddrive companies market 400gb as 1gb= 1000mb, however, Windows reads it as 1gb=1024mb, as it really is. Also, according to them, 1mb=1000kb, when it is in fact 1024kb, etc.

So, 400gb harddrive = 400,000,000,000 bytes

400,000,000,000 / 1024 / 1024/ 1024 = 372.53gb actual

Beat me to it... If you read the fine print, you'll find something about this. It's just their way to sell you less for more :-/

well for one it is good marketing but also you've got to think, it reduces confusion for comp. illiterate people.

Then why do we keep getting questions here about it? :p I see what you mean, but consider the amount as a whole rather than each megabyte. People expect a 400GB drive to show up as 400GB...

its miss-selling, im surprised they have gotten away with it for so long. But hey stuff like that is rife in the IT world.

They get away with it because they put a disclaimer somewhere on it...
well there is still an argument to be made about missleading customers, a disclaimer cant be used to bypass all supplier responsibilities. But like i said, its rife in the industry :)
