I know very little about networking but would like to create a wired network in my home including 10 desktop computers running Windows XP.

I was wondering whether you could give me some instructions containing: What euipment i will need and how i can go about wiring it up.

I would also like to be able to backup my files onto a network-attached storage device.

Let me know if you need any more information.

If you want to connect to the internet as well, you will need two basic components. A router, and a switch. You can attach a NAS device to the switch as well and use that as a networked storage device.

if you only have 10 computers, you would not need a server. You can just use your network as a workgroup. No need going above and beyond unless you want to. You would need a router provided to you by your ISP. You would only need a switch if the router you have doesnt contain enough ports. Most wirelss routers only come with 4 wired ports. In that case, connect your wireless router to your ISP modem, and a switch to the router.
