How do I access laptop hard driv with password?

Hello All. my laptop stopped working. I removed the hard drive and put it in an external encloser and it works. However, I had an admin password while it was in the laptop and now I cannot access the admin docs/areas on the hard drive. I know the password but dont know how and where to enter it when I access the hard drive while as an external USB drive since windows XP does not boot from this drive anymore . Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

you can use softwares like folder lock to lock(password protect ) a specific folder or you can use true crypt ( true crypt makes a separate location where the files are stored and then encrypted with password)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give it a try. It's my sons' laptopand all his homework is still on the HD. We just need to transfer his work and then reformat the laptop HD as it keeps playing up anyways.
