How does info physically travel from my home?

Possibly a silly question, but I've wondered for years.
I get how the internet works and all, but not how it physically work? I can get hundreds of dollars of equipment in my home, but all that info I'm receiving/producing leaves the modem in a single coax wire. Hundreds of houses in my neighborhood do the same, yet the cable line on the utility pole is so tiny. how does so much data stay intact and separate? When I search this, everything skips the physical part and just says house>ISP... but that's the most baffling part.
