How To Encrypt Files?

Can someone please tell me if it's possible to encrypt common picture and text files so that they can only be accessed on your computer?

I'm wondering 'cause I remember I had songs that were locked after I transferred them to a portable device. When I transferred them back onto my computer, my operating system had been rebooted and it didn't have the same identification code as before to open the audio files. When I tried opening the songs, I got a message saying something to the effect of "This is not the original computer for these files."

Any input is greatly appreciated.

crypedit

I have used crypedit.It uses two passwords and encrypts all files including graphics. Don't know if it works with later windows versions. Check the web, there may be a later version. Also check the laws concerning encryption.
