How to set up a TCP/IP p2p network over ethernet?

I'm stumped. I've tried several different methods, and nothing's worked so far.

Trying to connect a Win7 home 64b laptop to an XP home 32b desktop. What's the proper method for this?

I've done all of that...I still can't figure out how to get them to connect to each other :/

The XP machine can see the 7 machine when viewing its workgroup, but cannot access it for some reason. Sharing is enabled on both machines. Otherwise, I've been totally unsuccessful so far. :(

So if i understand, you're trying to access shared files on the laptop from your desktop. And when you try to access it from the windows xp machine it prompts for a username and password? If so on the Win7 machine check, Control Panel -> "Network and sharing center" -> "Advanced sharing settings" scroll down to "Public folder sharing" where there will be two options available.

If that's not it then i have no idea at the moment.

have you put the files in question in the shared folder or set the drive to be shared so the other pc can acesss it?
the files arent just on the c drive (or simalar) where they are not automatically shared
