IE 6 page cannot be displayed

I'm having a hum dinger of a time trying to get my laptop back up to speed after a Virtumonde virus. I went crazy w/ all kinds of registry cleaners & scans.

Now it seems to be gone, but so does my ability to access many websites.

Being the holidays, I've been shopping online and I can add an item to my cart, but I cannot "check out". I will get "page cannot be displayed". I tried to check the status of an order (that I made on a different computer) and I can't access the page to track my order.

I can't log onto my snapfish page. I can't log onto craigslist to edit my posts.

As you can imagine, this is extremely irritating.

I am assumming it's tied to my "infection" b/c It seemed to happen after that - but truly I don't know.

Other points to make: I tried upgrading to IE 7, but then I couldn't get online at all.

Also, I tried using Mozilla Firefox and couldn't get online using that either.

I am on a wireless connection using a Motorola router. I also tried plugging it in and it still happened.

Any suggestions?

Recently, I had a virus that completely blocked my Wireless.

The virus could seem to go away (like another computer of mine did...) but usually it will return. I'd suggest either a Repair of Windows, a Last Known Good Config, or a backup. If you need to get more drastic, a reformat. A reformat should do best though...

Post a HijackThis log and we'll see if there's any malware leftover:

Please download the HijackThis installer from http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe.

Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

When the Notepad window opens choose Edit -> Select All to select the entire log, and copy and paste the log into a reply post.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

This may also be due to altered security settings within Internet Explorer, I'd also recommend resetting them all to their defaults. See http://www.malwarehelp.org/how-to-reset-internet-explorer-6-to.html for more info.

My Hijack Log

I was going to post it, but thought it better etiquette to wait for a request. I didn't want to be presumptious:)

Tried your Winsock link

When I tried to run it, it said "not a valid win32 application.

Any other suggestions?

Redownload it. That means the download corrupted. Which further reinforces that your connection needs to be reset.

Try it on another machine.

Certainly some leftovers.

Please click on Start - Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. If Web Buying appears, click on it and click Remove:

Please run HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only.

Place a check next to the following entries:

  • O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - C:\Program Files\Online Services\dicoxurt.html
Please close all open windows except for HijackThis and choose Fix checked

Please delete the following file (if present):

You might want to use LSPfix and search for LSPs that don't belong, left over from infection. Post the entries here and someone can tell you which ones to delete, if any.

Also, use Smitfraud Fix. Clean your DNS entries (normal mode only) and use it to reset your trusted zones as well.

The Winsock fix will reset your connection when you're finished. You can also try the repair built into Windows after you've completed the previous steps. Right click on your connection and select "diagnose/repair" or whatever it is.

Just FYI

I think I solved the problem...

My Norton was out of date and I get CA free thru my internet provider - so I uninstalled Norton using their uninstall tool.

I no longer have the cannot display messages...
