Importing Ipod music to computer

I have several thousand songs in my ipod and computer currently, and I am going to reformat my computer soon. My question is, is it possible to take songs from my ipod and import them into my computer. I have played around with it and couldnt figure it out. Any suggestions? I googled it but the steps I found were to confusing and for use on Mac computers I have XP Pro sp2.

i thought you couldnt because ipods have some protection software which stop users copying music around, unlike better mp3 players e.g. by creative.

how about backing up the music onto dvds?

With my ipod you cannot put the songs on it on a different computer, or any computer that doesnt have them in the library. at least it didnt work with mine

Any ipod can be turned into a disk on your computer. You just have to enable it as a disk and turn on hidden files cnet.com has a long tutorial on how to do it in detail. I have done this on several computers and several differnet ipods.
