I've recently installed IE8 and it's causing problems. Pages not opening, wanting to close down all the time and others. I've just found out IE7 is better for XP, which i have, so i've downloaded it, but it won't install over IE8. Is there a way to downgrade without losing all my settings?

Of course it won't install over IE8, did you have IE7 previously. Then in Add/Remove programs just uninstall IE8 and it automatically reverts back to the previous version that never left your system.

-if you recently updated to ie 8 - the simplest way to fix the problem may be to choose a restore point to a date before you updated to the ie 8. It restores your computer's settings to the prior restore configuration at the date of your restore points. It's in your system tools folder. I've used restore points in XP a few times - and it's a lifesaver.

Can you download ie 7 from Mozilla Firefox?

If so -maybe delete ie alltogether - and open Mozilla Firefox web browser and download and install ie 7 from scratch.
