Linux or Vista?

I'm building my first computer and was wondering whether I should put Linux or Vista on it for the OS. Any suggestions?

If you could elaborate on what you want to do that would be tremendously helpful. I would say that Linux is more for advanced users.

Well to elaborate. I'm planning on using it for gaming and to write whatever code my AP Computer Science class requires us to do.

Ok. Seems pretty basic. I would just go with Vista or Windows 7 (release date Oct. 22, 2009).
Windows 7 runs a lot faster/smoother/better than Vista and is more friendlier to older systems.
Note that Linux doesn't always work with Microsoft programs and does take quite a bit of computer knowledge to run off of.

It's been proven that Windows 7 overall is not much faster than Vista at running programs, so either one you choose will be fine.

You can get Vista here for $109.99 with a Free Windows 7 Upgrade.

As far as Windows applications, good luck getting anything to install.

Linux is good for browsing and some networking applications, but that's about
it as far as I'm concerned.

Linux is good for programming as you can host multiple different things on your machine rather than having to uplaod to somewhere and its all very flexible, however, if you're looking for gaming then you'll be looking for windows, to which I would recommend waiting for 7 to be released, rather than getting vista with the upgrade, as you can have a clean installation rather than random hang-ons from the previous vista installation when you upgrade.
