Network as an analogy

I'm trying to get a standard computer network visualised as a non tech person. Using an analogy as a house (i.e. firewall = front door), can anyone help me put the following into laymans terms:

Permiter Firewall
VPN
Network Router
Network Switch
DMZ
Host Firewall
