Is there such thing as an External Harddrive that runs independantly, meaning it doesnt plug into a computer, but can connect wirelessley to a home router, putting it on the network?
Yup there are. But why wireless? That's very slow when you want to acces files on the hard drive.
You want a NAS (network attached storage). Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=241&Tid=18253&name=Network-Attached-Storage-NAS
Corrrr! For the price of some of those, it would be cheaper to set up a full microserver!
You could always get a router that supports USB network sharing like this one:

Then you just plug in a standard USB HDD into the router and set it up to share it in the router.
The more expensive ones basically are full microservers. Just completely configured and setup most of the times with a simple webinterface to manage.Corrrr! For the price of some of those, it would be cheaper to set up a full microserver!
