Yeah the 4850 or the 9800 should be suitable for that budget. If you want to overclock then I would suggest the nvidia card.

the GTX+ should be better than the 4850 right?

from my understanding:

9800GTX < HD4850 < 9800GTX+

Umm.. the only thing I have realized from my observation/comparison between the 8800GT and the 9800GT is the fact that the 9800GT uses a PCI-E 2.0 interface so the transfer speed should double. Also, it supports OpenGL 2.1 rather than the 2.0 from the 8800GT.

ummm pci-e 2.0 doesn't double the transfer speed it doubles the available bandwidth which there are few apps if any that would use all of the bandwidth of pci-e 1.0.

anyway, i would recommend the 4850 for now, maybe wait and see how the 9800gtx+ is performing... btw has anyone seen any benchmarks for it???

Go with the 9800 GTX, I can take mine up to 800 MHz on the core and it runs great. Turn up the fan a little and everything stays nice and cool. This is the best card for the money right now no questions! Price : Performance ratio and the 9800 GTX is clearly the winner.

XFX GeForce 9800 GTX(G92) for $179

(And this one has the G92 chipset unlike some 8800 series cards on the market still)

XOIN II case
ASUS P5N-E 650i mobo
Intel Q9300 @ 2.875 GHz
Corsair XMS2 Pro 4x1GB
Evga 9800 GTX @ 750 MHz
Antec Neo Power 650w PSU
Vista Home Pre 64 bit
13,945 3Dmark06

Your right ethan...the 4870 outruns the 9800 GTX...I got it... but it costs about $80 to $100 dollars more. Almost every review I have read about the 4850 and 4870 say they run way hot. A lot of people are going to aftermarket cooling just to keep them cool. With my 9800 GTX @800 MHz core and the fan at 95% I won't see a temp over 60c. A lot of people are getting temps in the 80s with this card. People are also complaining about driver issues which is pretty much getting straight now, some really good drivers are getting out there. So...what really is the best card? It's all just personal choice

the 9800gtx isn't the best card for the money, that would be the 4870. and you can get a 4850 for $175 and it outperforms the 9800gtx. and all 9xxx series cards have the g92 core
