Parity Drive

What exactly is a parity drive? i know in RAID 5 and is it RAID 3? there is a parity drive for error protection, but what is it? A backup of all the information on the hard drives? or just an overall backup? Can someone explain

A + B = C
1 + 2 = 3

If B blows, you can calculate what it was: 3-1 = 2. That is what the parity information is.
