Processor and Motherboard Build Advice?

My cousin asked me to build a computer for him. I'm not up on the best deals hardware wise. I just haven't had the spare money to upgrade and do a build recently.

He said he has $1000 to spend, and this is what I came up with. It's over by $189.92 currently.

Please note I gave him my old monitor, two new 500gig HDDs, and an old optical drive so those don't need to be on the list. I also have some Artic Silver 5(bought a tube when helping a friend a month or so ago).

Also note I'm HUGE on Asus. I have never once had a bad ASUS motherboard or video card. I would prefer that brand if possible.

I think the processor may be overkill. Are there any other options I could go with that are really good, but cost effective? I want this thing to be up-gradable so the motherboard needs to have another PCIE slot for possible 2-way SLI (it's Ok if I'd have to replace the PS down the line). I would also like the processor to be really good. This way he doesn't have to do a full rebuild in 4 years.

With all that said, it's great to post here again. Been a looong time.

If you're wanting to have the CPU last you a long time then the i7 isn't a bad idea. Games are using more than 4 threads that the i5 provides and you'll notice it in games now and in later down the line.

Drop to a 250gb SSD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0ZK-00AB-001B4&ignorebbr=1 $69.99
Drop to the I5 6600 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2F84D68843 $229.99

Saving $170 just in those 2. Could save a few bucks in the case and psu also. Only need a good 500 watt unit for the 1060.

Nice, thanks man. Yeah I don't know enough about price per performance CPU wise. That does seem to be a good fit, and some of the reviewers said they couldn't tell the difference between that and the 6700. I'm going to go with that chip then. Knocks over $100 off so that should be good.

The SSD can be smaller, but I figured there's room for more than a couple of games. I run on a 128gig SSD myself, and I hate having to swap out games between my drives. I just figured he would be better off with more space.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will likely go that route.

CPU to i5 6600K
Mobo - Z170 chipset instead
PSU - personally will get modular
RAM - should get faster http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232298

Modular isn't needed. The case has good cable management. It's not something that's required. I run a semi modular on my set up and while I would personally spend the extra money, my cousin likely won't. He wants price per performance. Also over clocking is super easy now days so if I have to squeeze some more out of his CPU, I can do that.

Also will that memory work? The board says it can do Dual DDR4 2133, but it has an Astrek next to the higher frequency sets of memory. I'm not 100% certain why it's like that, but I'm curious. I'd certainly go with the faster set if it's compatible with the board.

DDR4-3000 is fine for the board. I'd ditch the mobo for a z170 if you're planning on overclocking. Probably also want a better cooler if you're going to put a decent OC on the 6700k.

You may not need modular PSU, but I won't spend $75 on a thermaltake 750W
Seasonic M12II 620 for $60 with 5 years warranty is an good value.
I ignore your requirement of SLi as it usually be better to ditch existing GPU and replace with another mid-range in 3 years time.

Your original set up wit K series CPU, which I assume you/he will overclock. This mean that you should go for Z170 mobo and could use DDR4 3000 RAM

I have a semi modular Thermaltake 750w and they work great. The gold cert seems to be worth the extra bit of money as well.

I agree. I would go with a more powerful single GPU, but he's talked about SLI for awhile so I figured I'd give him that option and leave it open. Another reason for the 750W. 2 GTX1060s require a power supply right at 620watts for everything to run right. So I wanted that extra room if he decides to throw down that extra money.

Also the cooler is fine. I run the same cooler on a FX6200 @ 4.2 and it keeps it very cool. Before the OC it would ride at around 30c @ idle.
It won't be my computer so I don't think I'll set him up with an overclock. I went a long time before I even OC'ed my set up(just yesterday actually). I normally wait for at least a few years before that.

All this has me wanting to do a new build.
