if the data on your drive is important and it won't work, you can try buying an identical drive and switching the boards.

i have tried attaching it to a secondary drive but the drive is not spinning. if i try swapping the boards over, is there still a chance i cant retrieve my data of the hdd?

it should work if the board went bad but the hard drive itself is not physically damaged. just make sure to get the exact model for replacement.

Has this been done?
It might work but I guess it's really hard. You have to look for an identical one then get the board and put it on the old one, solder all those tiny wire carefully so as not to burn those small resistors, capacitors and chips errr! Good Luck!
If those datas are really important, I suggest sending the drive to a specialist who really do data recovery.
