Solid State

Hello, just wondering what a solid state drive is? I'm wondering because they are extremely expensive for lil capacity, are they more reliable or what?

Typically they rarely have any sort of failure, they run much quieter, and they have lower latency and quicker searching. It's basically a higher quality hard drive.

They have no moving parts, so they are ideal in laptops. They are also faster then conventional hard drives. O, and they are dead quite.

are ipods not all solid state these days? Can't imagine there's an actual hard drive in there, it's properly thin

What's the difference?

Basically solid state memory comes in 2 forms
Flash memory (like the ones in the modern day USB memory keys and Ipods)
SDRAM (like in ram)

Flash memory is non-volatile, meaning the data stored will be remembered when there is no power going to the device

SDRAM is volatile, meaning if the power is turned over all the memory is wiped clean

you can get DRAM solid state, which is bit of a cheat as it has a battery and back up the data in the event of power failure
