I'm building a new SQL server and looking for a bit of help. I;m looking at a max of 5 users but the size has out grown access a long time ago. I will be running Windows 008 64 bit and SQL Server 2008 Express.
The most important thing about the build is stability.

What power supply would you recommend?
Do you see any stability issues?

That 650W PSU that is included will run great for you. With all the drives that you are wanting to run I think you should be fine on a 600W. Do you realize the motherboard you selected has no on board video? You will have to purchase a video card for this server if you use the parts you selected. Other then that I think everything looks good. I would strongly recommend selected a motherboard with integrated video its way more cost effective. Another thing to consider is the fact that the amount of drives you have selected is total overkill. I have set up a few servers in my time and even with 20 users you wouldn't utilize all of the speed of your storage assuming that your are using raid 5 for redundancy.

I thought that motherboard had on board video with the dvi and vga port. But your right it dose say no video. I do like the motherboard but that is something to think about. I was thinking about a different power supply thinking about quality. With SQL it's better to split it between drives.

If there were more users or would be running more programs then I would go with an Xeon.

The Asus web site syas it has on board video.

nope, the mobo doesn't, but the i5 has a gpu on its die so that's where the video comes from :p And the psu in there is fine cuz it's an antec case it's an antec psu and they make good ones so you're fine there.

i'd say to aim for something more like this, they are made for handling more tasks at the same time and some other stuff like that, idk really but i know server cpus run servers better, otherwise they wouldn't make them. Otherwise a 2500k is worth it so you can overclock it and get the server faster.

Jonnyp11 he is wanting to have a STABLE server he doesn't want to overclock.... This is a server that is going to be handling a load of 5 users so in all reality any dual core could handle this task! He doesn't need to spend more money on his CPU at all the CPU he has selected is more then enough to handle a load of 50+ users. I would highly recommend getting a board with integrated video. Antec is a really good brand I would stay with the PSU already in the case it will be high quality for sure. BTW I have a SQL server on a dual core machine with more then 30 active connections at one time and it works like magic very fast! SQL is not very processor intensive unless your planning on using it as a web data instance then your going to need a xeon

I have not found another motherboard I like. I like Intel more than AMD and I like Ausu and Gigabyte. I'll do more looking tomorrow.

like i said, the graphics are on the cpu, look on its page, the mobo has no need for them since the cpu has some pretty dang good ones on it. and also gigabyte is considered a little higher quality/better support lately and also ASRock is a great brand too.

After doing a ton of reading and searching my gut feeling is an AMD with a ASRock motherboard.
Thank you jonnpy11 for sugesting ASRock.

I'm still thinking the same case, hard drive cage, and part of the hard drives (found a great article on hard drive setup with SQL.
