System Requirement Help

Hi all, i'd first just like to say that I am not computer savvy in the slightest and these problems I am having are probably simple, but I just can't get this straight. It involves system requirements for playing games on my laptop. First, I'll just list my laptops hardware.
Processor-Intel Core i7-2630 QM cpu @ 2.00 GHZ
Ram-6 Gigs
Video Card-Nvidia 550
Operating System-Windows 7

my problem is I am trying to run some modern games on this laptop, and I feel like they should be working, but they don't. I bought dead island, and the Can You Run It site said I am over the recommended system requirements and the game should run very smoothly. However, this game hardly runs at the lowest possible video settings. My question is, how can I tell if my computer can really run a game or not? I am scared to buy anything else now because I just don't know if it will work. Can someone help me with this?

What specifically is the laptop you own? Unless you spent a good bunch of money on a gaming laptop you won't be able to game.

Its a dell XPS 17, with the hardware listed above. I know its not a top of the line one, but it is listed as a gaming laptop

The point is simple. Mobile computers such laptops have lower speed than desktop machines.
That mean a CPU with 800Mhz buss at desktop, on laptop the "mobile edition" will run at 667Mhz about...
But the clock will be the same.. eg: 2Ghz on desktop and 2Ghz on laptop.
Same happen and with "mobile" chips GPU...
For that reason mobile editions CPU or GPU cannot put on desktop machines, and same for desktop editions CPU-GPU...
Tha applied and for memory speed..
So the best choice is to get a laptop with specs a bit better from the games you plan to run on laptop...
Eg:
For a old game if say recomend hardware Core Duo 2.8Ghz and GPU GF-8800GT
Then find a laptop with ... i3 CPU 2,8Ghz and GPU 9800GT...
