Ok, quick run down below:-

1. From home I can VPN onto works network successfully but Im unable to see the Network/Shared drives/Mapped Drives even using UNC
2. I cannot ping anything on the network.

Any ideas?

VPN device security settings blocking traffic but allow the connection to be initialized perhaps? Check access rules. What kind of VPN is this? What device are you connecting to to gain access?
