those are both single core...
multitasking= dual cores, opteron 165 or x2 3800

well, if you really must choose from those 2 cpus you have there.
let me ask you one more question, will you overclock your cpu once you buy it?
if YES, get opteron 146, its crazy
if NO, go with 3700, its not bad at all at its stock speed, + it doesn't overclock as well as opterons.

the video card matters when you want to play nice games,,,
7800gt would be really nice. $300 or so.
if thats too much for you, get like a 6800 series for less than $200.

If you're looking for a good all-rounder, consider the X2 3800+ or Opteron 165. Yes they're a little more expensive, but will perform considerably better on anything multithreaded.

if you recall this is the cpu section of the forum, and the cpu does matter alot when playing games.
btw id go with the one with higher frequency or cache. theyre both good im sure, but i'd prefer the athlon 64 over the opteron
the x2 3800+ works just fine for me, i do alot of gaming, plus i o/ced it a nice 400mhz
