Hello everybody.. I please hope you can pleeease help me...

Im trying to fix a friends notebook computer. It has no cdrom drive or floppy drive so I copied the winxp disk onto a usb stick and am trying to install it from there...

the computer will boot from usb but every time the install starts copying files it is copying them back onto the usb stick so consequently runs out of room and stalls..

the installer does not give me the option of where to install files

when the computer boots up it is assigning the usb as C: and the computer hard drive as D:

i tried copying the I386 folder onto the D: drive to try installing it from there but for some unknown reason the I386 folder turned into a file and is now inaccessable

ive tried changing the boot order in the bios but if I boot the hard drive first i get this

Code:
GRUB loading
error: no such partition
grub rescue>

which i assume is leftover from an old ubuntu install

I repartitioned and formatted the hard drive but cannot get rid of this grub boot loader

could you please give me any advice or help

all i want to do is install xp
