8800GTX a worthy consideration?

I just picked one up for $200, not sure if it was a steal or anything...still outdated? i've been out of the loop with these things for a while, i see the 9 series was a sort of flop in terms of power over the previous 8 series, but what about the newer cards?

Can I be brutally honest

For $200 you could have go yourself a ATI 4850...

And it beats the 8800GTX (maybe not at very high res)

But its an OK buy, it will last you the year or more

yeah, the 4850 is definitely the best $200 card you can out there by a mile. the one you picked up is inferior by quite a bit. take it back if you can. you can even go to best buy and pick up a 4850 for $200.

Yeah but i live in Canada, not the states, we don't really have any retailers like newegg around here, and i avoided the 13% tax we have here.

Nah, there actually is a pretty cheap computer website, I think it starts with N. I forget the name though :(

but canadian dollars are less then american dollars i think, and electronics are more expensive so that was like $160 here after everything. not a bad deal, but its still a power-hungry old beast.

if i were looking for a 4850, it would come up to $250, yea its the better card, but the idea of power consumption isn't too concerning and the $50 is better spent on gasoline for my car :).

8800gtx is not bad. but i want 8800 ultra for 200.00 usd.

4850 vs 8800gtx.... i will still say 8800gtx is slight higher in speed/power but for bang for the buck is 4850 since it is newer and only slight lower.

am i wrong?

the new ATI cards are a bit wierd. In some games they outperform Nvidia cards but in over games they are way behind

Also they run extremely hot. Especially the 4850 etc...

Remember the 4850 is single slot. Compare it to the 8800GT

And ATI still has to release their drivers where they will start using the power saving tech, fan control all that jazz that will help the temps

PPL have gotten a drop from 80* to 45* with a bump in fan speeds from 25% to 35% with the 4870....

Good enough for me...

was just wondering because my friend wants to swap it for an 8600 but IMHO the x1950 pro is better (even if its not dx10)

Where have you been? It was big news when the $CA and $US where worth excatly the same like 6 months ago. *facepalm* If things are more expensive there, its probably due to the socialist leaning governments higher taxes. (I'm not trolling, more government programs=high taxes=things more expensive)
