Question about Processing Speed

Ok I'm looking to buy a new computer and I'm using a website where I can choose different option that suits my needs.

Now I want around 5GHz of processing speed to play games such as call of duty

If I choose the "INTEL Core 2 Duo T8300 (2 X 2.40 Ghz 800MHz FSB/3MB L2 Cache" option for the processor does this account for 4.8GHz?

Help is GREATLY appreciated.

No, you can't add them together. Each core will run at 2.4Ghz. That is your max speed. Unless you overclock it.

Depending on the CPU and how many cores it has, the computer spreads the tasks out to the cores.
 
think of it like a factory

in the old days they had one long, pretty fast converyor belt
now they have a number of teams doing the work.

the old converyor belt was faster but it meant you could only assemble one thing at the same time.

the team based approach is physicallyslower, but better and doing more than one thing at once

this is how it is with dual core. Anyway, you cant even compare clock speeds because the cores are so much more effiicient than the netburst cpus. A Core Solo 1.8ghz can outperform a 3ghz Pentium 4.

Core 2 Duo or quad does not mean multiply the processor speed (its a common misconception)

Rather what is does is have 2 cores (CPU's in one, to make it simple) and they work at 2.4Ghz (or othe speeds)

They work at 2.4Ghz, but can do twice the amount of work as there are 2 cores (each core take a share of the work load, enabling it to do more work or multi task...)

My CPU is fine for CoD4... I OCed and i got a 5 frame boost... So get something about 2.6Ghz and up... The E8400 is highly recommended, or if you want quad (in my opinion its better) get a Q6600 or Q9450
 
my analogy is like this:

with single core you have a single train that can hold a certain amount of passengers, small train), and with dual core you have two trains that can each hold the same amount of passengers... clockspeed being the miles(or kilometers) per hour.

going at the same clockspeed your trains arrive at the same time, BUT you can carry twice as many passengers.

playing a video game is like transporting 1 trains capacity worth of passengers. you don't need two trains to do it, and it's not going to get done any quicker.

although, most games do benefit from it nowadays, if not from being multi-threaded but from the extra core taking care of other background operations or your iTunes because you love listening to music while you play games.

but, to answer your REAL question: the 2.4ghz processor will work just fine if you have enough system memory and if your graphics card meets the games system requirements :)
 
i know i was just saying that your definition was confusing,

sounds to me like you are talking about cache, which you werent
 
How about this analogy ...
You have a tank full of water that you want to empty and you have two taps. (2 cores)
You will empty the tank twice as quickly if you open both taps than if you opened one (single core)
Same work done but twice as fast.
 
Don't mind me, I just fancy hi-jacking this thread slightly!

How does it work with dual processors? I've got 2 dual core 2ghz guys churning away, what does it compare to?>
 
the same. If the app aint multithreaded it wont use it.

2x single core Xeons appears the same as a Pentium 4 with HT
2x dual core Xeons appears the same as a core quad.

etc.....

they just appear as CPUs to the system.
