Why Overclock and make a CPU do something it was not met to do :confused: . Just buy a faster processor to start. I am sure it cuts into the life span of whole system. On my new builds I make them last 5 years or so and then go all new just because. And no I don't use my PC for games. But I do like having a very effective system.:D
 
well people wanna do it to get more out of there parts, if they choose to do it for a faster processing speed then its there choice.
 
As soon as they got a stock chip at 4GHZ plus that is reasonable price, then we will be o'cing at 5+
 
Haha, yep. OCing doesnt cut the life down too much. I have an old comp, with an older Pentium processor, not sure which one, but was stock at 700mhz. Oced to 1.4ghz and has ran like that for the last 6 years.

Still works.

Most people who OC, are probably the same people who arent going to have the same comp for 6-10 years, so whatever cut on lifespan Ocing can do, wont really effect most of us.

CPUs are smart now though. I have mine OCed to 3ghz, but when there is little to no load on it, like listening to music, browsing online and stuff, it is underclocked to 1.6 or 1.8ghz.

But why OC? Well, just like you.

Unless you go really hardcore with your OC, it's not going to shorten the life span of the CPU significantly - by the moment the CPU would die because of OCing the computer would be way outdated and replaced anyways.

Sure, but where are these 3.9Ghz quad cores? Oh yeah, they dont exist. Just to tell ya, your gonna get about 100 responses cussing you out since this is.. well, an enthiust forum. Overclocking barely if any reduces lifespan unless you are pumping insane amounts of voltage through it. And no rig, even buying every part top end will ever last 5 years, id like to see someone try crysis on a pentium 4 and an X600 pro..

Overclocking's benefits far, far, far outweigh its detriments. OCing is not necessarily what makes the CPU die early, it is heat. Heat kills your CPU faster, this is why people that OC use exotic means to cool their CPUs, I use water-cooling, others use huge heatsinks, rich people use even more exotic methods such as phase-change. The general rule of thumb is "for every 10C your cpu averages, its lifespan is reduced by half" I didn't make that up, I just read it somewhere but it seems like it would be pretty accurate, 10C is a pretty big jump.
Also, these chips are meant to be clocked at that speed. CPUs are made in batches, all of them with the same specs, some are down-clocked and sold at a lower price, some couldn't handle the default clock and were dealt with by lowering the clock speed as well. Sometimes L2 cache is cut off of the lower-priced ones to make them a little cheaper. Since it doesn't really cost them any more money to make a higher-performance CPU than it does a lower-performance one, they just make all high-perf. ones and then lower them accordingly later.

Yes, heat does affect the lifespan of the CPU, but -unless you have crappy cooling- not as much as overvolting.
The general rule of thumb is "for every 10C your cpu averages, its lifespan is reduced by half" I didn't make that up, I just read it somewhere but it seems like it would be pretty accurate, 10C is a pretty big jump.

Probably depends on CPU, but I really don't think 10C jump reduces the lifespan that much...
 
current processors are capable of running much faster than the manufacturer ships them out at.

the e8400s are a perfect example with some people getting them to 4.5Ghz with good cooling.

thats 1.5Ghz free speed boost.
 
Why overclock? Because it's FREE extra performance just sitting there. Also, the lifespan is not lowered by much. By the time your CPU dies from being overclocked, there are gonna be new/better/cheaper processors to upgrade to anyways.
 
Forgot to add something serious in my post. Yeah overclocking is just free extra speed, whats 3 months of your CPU life?
 
you see, we here are very protective of our precious overclocking lol. i have my processor meagerly overclocked to 3GHZ from 2.2GHZ and i can personally guarantee you that the computer i have right now could run without being turned off for a good year without a failure, except for the hard drives maybe. (and thats just because my IDE drive is already 4 years old...)

My computer is currently 6 years old. :)
Came with 126MB ram, 40GB HDD :)
 
OC-ing cuts the lifespan... yea, still the components will be outdated way before they die of 'old age' so who cares?
either way, i see how someone doesnt want to overclock, people usually fear what they dont know. (heck, i know I do sometimes :) ) everyone has to make that decissision for themselves really. some people like running after a ball with 21 other people on a square of grass (soccer), I dont see the point of that either, but hell, if they like that, just let em! :D
 
on the note of voltage killing something, it takes quite a bit to actully kill something from voltage, i know of people who clock their qx's to 5ghz+ using 1.9volts+ that still havent died
