Decent Free AntiVirus?

I've been a pretty die-hard AVG users for a while but recently have been pretty disgusted with their software and service. I've been using Avast on this i7 since I built it and so far so good.

Tisk tisk tisk...Never a good idea.

ALWAYS make sure you have the new software first.

Now you're browsing around the internet trying to find links to Avira unprotected.
Heh, going to a download site getting an antivirus software isnt going to cause you to get a virus unless you dont use the official avira site... Personally speaking, half of the time i dont install an antivirus for 2-3 weeks after i reinstall my os.

Exactly.

All it takes is one bad click and you're done.

It's irresponsible to suggest it's "ok" to not use A/V software and browse the internet.

I would maybe risk it, but I have Vista with UAC turned on...

Well, for one if your getting avira you should type www.avira.com into the address bar, two, if your using firefox or the latest version of IE, its going to alert you before anything is downloaded.

Edit: Come to think about it....i should probably download avira myself hehe.

You're assuming some level of common sense, and that the user is running
said current software.

I wouldn't assume anything when advising others.

Someone that's less knowledgeable might click on that notifier.

Anyway, like I said, it's not a good idea.

I never said you couldn't get away without running A/V software, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it or advocate it.

Ill just stay neutral on the issue. As long as the user has some technical knowledge and common sense, then i wouldnt see too much of a problem. If the user is a complete "noob" so to speak, then i highly wouldnt recommend browsing without protection.

P.S. Avira has changed since i last installed it... has it really been that long since ive had a/v on here... must be... (I use kaspersky on any builds for people as its the most user friendly imo, plus technically commercial use(eg- building and selling a computer) is against avira and everything else free's tos)

The OP never supplied any level of "technical knowledge", and common sense isn't that common anymore.

You stay neutral if you want.

My advice stands.

It's always a good idea to have your new A/V software ready to install before you uninstall your current A/V software.

It's never a good idea to run without it. :good:

/my input

This has turned into a real humpty dumpty sat on a wall:D

Best way, just download the new one you want to install. Uninstall the old one, use a cleanup tool or if you know how just manually delete any files it left. Install the new one, update and away you go.

As I posted earlier, I wasn't able to figure out how to download Avira without subscribing to one of they offers, which I didn't want to do.
