Iphone for T-mobile

Would it be worth buying a jail broke phone? Does anyone know the ups and down of a jail broke phone? What can I do and not do?

A jailbroken phone does not mean it can be used on another carrier, you would need an unlocked phone to do that. A phone can be SIM unlocked, or software unlocked using a utility called Yellowsn0w.

I've had my phone jailbroken for the past several months, and it is much better in my opinion. I like being able to customize the look, add a background, change the icons, and little tweaks like having the weather icon display the actual temperature instead of just 73*, and having status notifier which displays a little icon on the top bar when you have mail, SMS, or missed call.

wouldn't you have to be jailbroken eventually to use yellowsnow?

anyway to add, the only cons i can think of are battery life may decrease if you have themes installed (winterboard app), performance might slow down a bit and if you encounter any errors and need to have it checked by apple, you'll have to restore your iphone's firmware to a non-jailbroken state.

So you don't have any experience on a carrier other then AT&T? I just want to make sure most everything is going to work. I don't care about the dataplan or anything. I just want phone, text, and apps to work.

Yes, but if a phone is only jailbroken, that doesn't mean it can be used on another carrier. I don't want him getting a jailbroken phone thinking that he can use it on T-Mobile. As of now, if a phone was updated to 3.1.2, AFAIK the baseband can not be downgraded and unlocked.

But you are right, with Winterboard performance is a tad slower. Worth it IMO.

I do not, but I did a lot of research when I got my iPhone because I was thinking about doing that as well (that is, before I got my 15% discount and the price difference wasn't enough for the even worse service of T-Mobile in my area).

If you go T-Mobile, you will not have 3G service, only EDGE. So you may want to find an iPhone 2G for cheap. I believe MMS works, but don't quote me on that.

As long as the wifi works at my house, and I can make calls and text, im good. I dont need a data plan or anything.

T-Mobile runs 3G networks, plus to be honest 3G and edge are not all that much different.

I used a program called pwnage I think to jailbreak and unlocked.

Now the question is, how to find a cheap Iphone. Theres one on craigslist in my town, but the guy wants $375 for it 8gig used....

I bought my 8gig for $100 used

Man, people are stupid...why do people think they can get more then their stuffs worth. I'm willing to spend $200 or so on a phone right now. I see it all the time on craigslist, you name it, its over priced.

Yes, T-Mobile has 3G but when you unlock the iPhone you can not utilize T-Mobile's 3G, only EDGE. Edge ~200Kbps, 3G ~1.5Mbps are the speeds that I usually get.

You are correct about Pwnage tool, that's what you use to jailbreak and unlock it.

I know you said you don't want a data plan, but realistically most of the functionality of the iPhone is based around having an internet connection. Lots of apps rely on online databases.

I like the touch screen and the fact that I can get aps for it. A guitar tuning Ap would be nice, theres tons of other things I can think of. Also the Mp3 player would be nice, my cars already setup for that. Iv been wanting an Mp3 player so, this would kinda go hand n hand.

I may have found a 3G for $150 through a guy I work with. Is there anything I should look for when testing this phone out?
