Which quad core?

I'm trying to upgrade to a quad core sometime soon, especially since newegg will have end of the year sales, and I was wondering which one I could get on a budget.

I found the Amd athlon 2 quad core 630, and it came with the Asus EVO mobo for $210 and a $10 rebate. I wasn't able to see
much of a difference between the athlon and phenom, unless someone could explain. It saves me a ton of money staying with the athlon version. Thanks

I'm trying to spend about $200, give or take, or the CPU and mobo.

The Phenom II has 6mb. L3 cache. The Athlon II has no L3. For the price of the 630 I would just get a Phenom II 720BE.

Its $10 cheaper then what you choose plus it will be 4cores @ 3.1 ghz after the cores are unlocked. It shouldnt be too hard.

Also

You can get 720BE for $120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103649 and motherboard for $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128392. If you are lucky you will be able to unlock the extra core ;)

Sorry, I forgot to add some stuff and my PC's glitched with,
By the way if you unlock the x3 core you get x4 at 2.8ghz, but if you get the combo i posted it will be running at x4 @ 3.1ghz. Plus the motherboard susik89 picked wont be able to unlock cores, you need a motherboard with SB750.
I'll post how to unlock the cores with my combo later.

but you cant always unlock the extra core

Is your triple core pretty stable opened to 4 cores and at that Ghz?

When you OC, you'd check stability with Prime95 or some other such "torture test." I'm pretty sure if he had any failures, Stranglehold would've put it back down again, so my guess is that it's stable. But you might need after-market cooling as to achieve a higher OC, you'd probably have to raise voltages, thus making the CPU hotter.

***EDIT***
(Even OC'ing it without raising voltages will make it hotter)

Yeah its stable. I've had it up to something like 3.8/9 stable. But I want to keep the voltage lower so I settled on 3.5 with 1.375V.

But I bought this one the first week they were out. The first ones had a better chance at overclocking and a working 4th. core %.

Edit.

For around 200 bucks. If your not going to try to run Crossfire.

I know that the triple cores (720be) are either quad cores with the 4th core dissabled or just a quad core with a broken fourth core, but what are the chances that I can open that 4th core up?

If it is too much of a risk and I am focused on getting a quad core, does this look like a good set up? >>

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103674

MoBo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402

Is there anything wrong with that CPU? I doesn't have as many ratings as the other quad cores for the same price and it has a higher GHz on each core (.2)

I thought, if I really want a quad core, why be a fricken Penny Pincher, and just save $60 more for it.

the phenom II black edition is a very good cpu, nice motherboard too...

im not sure on the chances of unlocking the 4th core on the tripple i think its just pot luck and the right motherboards to do that!

i would stick with the phenom II x4, nice choice

Like funkysnair said, thats a good setup. .

As far as unlocking the 720BE. All of the ones I have installed would unlock. But its been about 2 months since I've installed one. The newer ones I have heard the % is alittle lower. Its all about supply and demand and yield rates.

Since they released the Phenom II X2 with 2 cores disabled. They make 20/30 bucks less on them, you know they are going to dump more of the ones with real bad cores on them. Well if AMD has any sense at all thats what they would do.Thats why I say you have a better chance of unlocking a 720.

But if you want to spend the extra 40 bucks go for the 955.

Okay cool, Ill just stick with the quad core. And thank you, I wasn't sure if that MoBo was a good idea for this build or not.

The motherboard says it has 2 PCIe x 2.0 slots ones a x16 an the other is x8. Does that mean I can still SLI or can I not put an ordinary x16 card in that x8 slot?

Thanks again
