i7 920 vs Phenom II 965

I have read many reviews that say the 955 and 965 BE are very close to the i7 920 when it comes to gaming. But I am curious about how they do with video editing.

My current setup cannot handle running Sony Vegas with 15-20 clips in it. I'm looking for a cpu, mobo and ram setup that will allow me to max almost every game and also be able to run Sony Vegas and render HD videos fast.

I want to make sure the ram, and cpu I buy can handle anything I throw at it when it comes to video editing.

So summed up, I want to play videos, render HD videos and play games. What are your opinions between the two processors I listed and can you recommend a motherboard and 6-8 gb of ram to go with it.

I'd most definitely get the i7--it's definitely better than those AMD processors at stock speed, but if you even mildly overclock it (say, in the 3.4Ghz range from 2.66Ghz on the 920--very easy on nearly all processors with stock voltage), there's not even a question.

Even though the i7 is generally more expensive, it will last you--if you can find a Microcenter nearby, the i7 920 is only $200!

Well if I can get the i7 920 for $200, there's no questions what ill be buying.

Is the website for the store your talking about called microcenter.com? If so there is a store near me.

Microcenter.com does not list the i7 920 as a product they sell?

If you chose a local Mircocenter store - on the drop down menu - you should find the core i7 920 in stock. The link above is to CA. Silicone Valley ( top of web page ) - Choose the store closest to your location to check inventory.

I checked all the local stores and Cincinnati, OH is the only location that doesn't have em in stock right now. If that's your location - I'd call the local store and ask if / when they expect more.

I went to Microcenter to pick up the i7 920 but after I priced out a decent mobo, ram, windows 7, and the cpu... it was over my budget by a decent amount. So i decided to go with the Phenom II 955 BE, Corsair XMS3 2x2gb ddr3 1600mhz ram, windows 7 and the MA790XT-UD4P motherboard.

Everything is installed and i'm on this site with the computer now. So far so good. I have to reinstall all my goodies but so far it is fast. Ill test rendering and games out soon.

Thanks for all the help.

OK thanks. I just ran 3DMark06... got this:

I dont want to attempt overclocking yet. I will wait until i find a good cooler. Later comes a new psu, gtx 295 and a faster HD for games only.

This is with no tweaks to the system what so ever. Stock clock and all
