I am planning on building a new gaming comp and was wondering what the best CPU for gaming is? My budget for this is around $300

+1 OMEGA great processor only ever seen the processor upto 30% usage on all HT 8 cores in games such as fallout 3, dirt 2, Just cause 2 and Saints Row 2 all in all best processor and also bang for buck. :good:

yes even my 920 goes upto 26% max only seen it at 100% with prime95
i7930 would be the way to go

with the 100 bucks he saves from the CPU if he buys i5 750 he can go for a better GPU .

See the things you left out is that if you choose to go i5 rather than i7. You don't just save 100 from the CPU. You save money on RAM and on the mobo.

+1 p55s are cheaper than x58s and the dual channel controller also makes you buy either 4gig or 8gis of memroy not odd 6gigs

I would get the i5-750 over the i7-920 (930) any day now that I own both. Especially since I had game artifacts with the i7-920 that EA says is caused by the hyperthreading on the i7. They do not exist with the i5-750.

Edit, and they proved it to me by having me shut down some of the cores.

Don't need to disable some of the cores. There is an option in the BIOS to disable HT.

What EA games are you talking about?

He asked what the best processor was for under $300, which is the i7 930, end of story. He never mentioned that he needed/wanted to upgrade his video card or RAM, so those are not reasons to choose a lower processor.

mmmm k thanks guys but i can go up more n from what ive heard i7 is really good so i mite go for that
Good choice!

The problem with artifacting in those games is that EA made them. EA is the most horrible game producer ever... they just milk the series now, look at need for speed. they also stop you from reselling your games now (or trying to at least) and have the always-online DRM that ubisoft is famous for.

anyway i second the i7 930 if you can afford it. if not, the i5 750 is always there. so is the Phenom II x6 1055T.
