Why are SSDs so Expensive?

I typed that into google and most people say the same thing...because its new technology,I know theyre very fast but come on....the price tags! :cool:

In your opinions....why do you think theyre so expensive? just greed from the manufacturers?....Surely they cant be that expensive to produce!

technology and someone has to pay for it now. Eventually we will see competition. thats what brings the price down. then it becomes a standard. competition is good. keeps everybody else in check. Stores the same way.
 
Silicon to produce them is expensive, same reason that thumb drives are still expensive....flash memory is not cheap to produce as its relatively low density. Look at even just volatile flash memory such as ddr3, $100+ for 4gb of memory. As densities improve, costs will decrease.

That OCZ 1TB drive makes use of a high end raid style controller and such, in addition to all the flash memory onboard. Its marketed towards server style usage where fast accessing of data is required.

I don't really think the cost of silicon has anything to do with it, no offense. The production cost and research and development is going to far exceed the cost of materials in this case.

Do you realize how much it costs to produce a wafer of silicon? Research and development has alot to do with it, but perhaps i worded what i was saying wrong. By the time you put the silicon to wafers/manufacturing, yes you've spent millions in R&D, but then the actual cost of the product comes along. I'll have to see if i can find the specifics, but a wafer of silicon is extremely expensive as it has to be nearly 100% pure.
 
Sorry, I think we just misunderstood each other. You're talking about silicon wafers, but from your first post I thought that you were referring to the raw silicon.

the rare earth minerals that dope the silicon is hell expensive

to then get a series of tranistors tracked on a silicon wafer requires massive investment (millions)

ssd drives require this relatively scarce material. it isn't new technology at all. its just scarce resources.
 
It's just because it's new technology and that SSD's are somewhat faster than regular HDD's. If the speed was the same as normal HDD's I'm sure they'd be a lot cheaper as they offer only small benefits then.
 
if i buy a SSD end i instal my system on SSD i cen used my WD HD for saving files ?

The less you use the SSD in terms of moving files on and off it the longer it will last. The major flaw with SSD is that 1 cell can only be written on so many times before you can no longer write to it.
So the less writes to it the better....and with the above list you wont notice a speed hit with movies/music/videos but games/os/programs will load super fast for you.
