Is this combination good for a Desktop Pc?

Hi,

I need to buy a new desktop for CAD/CAM/CAE work. I have worked out the following configuration. Is it right and compatible? What is the plus and minus points of it? :confused:

1] Mother board = Gigabyte GA-880 GM-UD2H
2] RAM = Corsair DDR3 2 GB with heat sink
3] Processor = AMD Dual Core - X2
4] Hard disk = Seagate Baracuda 3.5" 1 TB
5] DVD Writer = LG Sata dvd writer.

Mother Board -
I see most of the gamers use Gigabyte Motherboards, and since these gamers are good at selecting their hardware, I only mimicked their choice in mother board. I have never used a Gigabyte mother board before.

Processor -
I have read comparisions between Intel and AMD proessors. It seems AMD are a bit faster than intel. A cyber cafe owner who is a friend of mine says he has AMD dual cores on his pcs and they get hung a lot compared to the pcs that have Intel processors.

RAM -
Corsair is good or not? what are the technical plus points in contrast to other manufacturers ?

Hard drive -
Seagate is a renowned manufacturer. DO these HDs come in diferrent speeds? I know the 7200 one, what else is there in it ?

ps:- I forgot to ask - The gigabyte mother board I have selected has a single ps2 combo connector. How do I connect my keyboard and mouse which both have a ps2 connector to this MB?

All combinations are good enough, the brand names that you posted are popular and good enough so that you can buy em.

I am from Pune too. Anyways, What about the mouse and keyboard combo ps2 socket on the Gig??. How to connect 2 diferent devices with to different connectors into a combo ps2 socket on the Gigabyte mother board?
Is there an adapter conector availabe for this?

Another question
Should I go for AMD core 2 duo or dual core? & why?
 
I would go for a AMD Phenom II x2 or Phenom II x4 processor. The reasoning is simple, AMD is cheaper than the intels that it competes with.

As for the keyboard issue, you will need to get a usb mouse or keyboard to use it.

In pune where are you getting the parts? I am hunged up around M.G road to get the i7-2600k.

Also get a quad core, AMD phenom X4 would be good.
 
ok guys, I got myself the Giga 880 GM UD2H:D , 1 TB Segate and an LG dvd writer. The Corsair 2GB ram with heat sink is on its way.

I almost bought the AMD dual core processor and backed off at the last minute in the shop. The seller gave me a strange look, but was ok with it later..lol.There was this etch in my mind telling me that its not the processor for me and I should go for a better one. I have even paid the seller an advance as for the whole lot and asked him to wait until I make a decession on the processor. He was allright with it.

So here I am again to get your valuable inputs on the processor.

Tell me what difference will a 2.9 Ghz make with a 3.1 Ghz AMD Quad core?

I am working with 3D, CAM programming as well as some more analysis software. Currently building a cnc lathe as well as a cnc 3 axis mill.

I am gonna build my own pc cabinet. The frame will be made out of 1/2 inch square stainless steel pipe with 18 Gauge thickness. The cpu will be a modular design as to keeping in mind
1] Removing hard disk
2] Graphics card fitting
3] Overaul air flow
3] Removing dvd writer.
4] Wall mount option.
5] Castor wheels on the bottom (just to change places in case , even though this seems unnecessary:D)
6] more ideas as I go about buildign it:rolleyes:
 
the only difference between a black edition and a regular processor is the multiplier is unlocked on the Black. This only helps with overclocking. The black edition will work on any board designed to accept AMD AM3 processors.

As for the one you listed, I wouldnt get it. Your best option is to get a Phenom II x4. THey have L3 cache, which is always better to have (helps with multitasking).

How about this one? I am asking because it seems there are variations in the same processor types regarding GHz .
Can you please elaborate the whole processor name like the 945 etc after the Phenom-2-X4 name.

Phenom II x4 955. Its the cheapest Black edition. A simple multiplier change can set it to the stock of all the other BE CPUs.

What does BE CPUs mean ? Sorry , I am not an expert into the pc hardware:rolleyes: I did not understand Multiplier change too.

Some question with ram.What do the following 4 points in a ram define? How do I select the appropriate ram for myself?

1] SPD Latency: 9-9-9-24
2] Tested Latency: 9-9-9-24
3] Speed Rating: PC3-10600 (1333MHz)
4] Tested Speed: 1600Mhz

Another silly question probably :- Are all Phenom 2 X4 processors 64 bit only, or can I install a 32 bit in case. :confused:
 
CPU stands for central processing unit. If you change the multiplier with a Black Edition processor the clock speed will run higher than the stock settings. If you are new I wouldn't bother messing with overclocking.

64-bit processors can run 32-bit or 64-bit operating systems. If a processor is only 32-bit it cannot run a 64-bit operating system. All processors manufactured within the last several years are 64-bit compatible. I am out of time presently. I will be back online later.
 
Concerning what your friend has said about AMD dual-cores getting hung a lot I would guess he has an older AMD dual-core processor and not an Athlon II generation processor. The Athlon II generation of processors combined with DDR3 RAM are much faster than the older first generation Athlon processors. Phenom II processors are even better than Athlon II processors because they have more memory.

The Phenom II 945 Quad-Core Processor is a great choice to put at the heart of a system.

Concerning what memory you should buy I would look at DDR3 1600. Do not worry about latency and timings. Just look at 4 gigabytes of the following brands of memory and you should be okay:

A-Data
Corsair
G.Skill
Kingston
PNY
pqi
Super Talent

What power supply are you going to use with this system?

to dive jsut a little deeper, the multiplier setting is how much the front side bus (data thats shared with the PCI and PCI-e, RAM, and Sata ports) is multiplied by to get the processor speed. To keep the math simple, lets say that we have a BE with 100MHz FSB. If it has a Multiplier of roughly 10, you are operating at roughly 1GHz. Bump the multiplier up to 20 its 2GHz, 30 is 3GHz. Are you starting to see how it works now? (this was just an example).
 
if you want to stay in warranty spec for the amd processors, dont get 1600 speed ram, get 1333, to me the diff in performance is...not worth voiding warranty. highest rated speed for the memory controller according to amd is 1333.

I knew that the highest speed for the memory controller for Socket AM3 was 1333 megahertz, but I did not know it would void the Advanced Micro Devices warranty by pushing the speed up to 1600 megahertz.
