Hello all,

Ive been using my Alienware laptop for the last 6 months for playing games. However I dont think its gonna be up for BF3 so I will be building a tower for my desk at home. I have gone on to a UK site to get a good idea how much its going to cost me.

Please have a look at the specs below and let me know what you think...

Cheer again ppl!

Thanks for the comments daisymtc, why Intel? Please explain... If its better bang for the buck then fine I will go Inte...

Cheers

make sure you get a new mobo and all that stuff, especially gpu, but that hdd is a waste, they aren't close to ssd's and cost a ton, i'd go fot a 1tb caviar blue/black with sata 6gb/s's, then if you want throw in a 32gb ssd since anything higher is over 100usd

Hi Nevakonaza, I think about 1,000 - 1,200 tops.

Very good budget,How does this look.

Id stick with a single GPU setup,The reason i choosen the 2GB model of the 6950 is because i can only assume that BF3 will have quite large maps and if you want to set graphics settings to the very highest then the more Vram would come in handy.

You could bring the cost down a bit buy going with a cheaper Motherboard and ditching the Asus Xonar D1 sound card,Although its up to you if you get one or not, i would recommend getting it.

Total = £1,198.55

Cheers for that Nevakonaza. Just a few questions as I might place an order for these parts soon.

- What do you think about the case I picked? That GPU looks pretty big...
- Also what's so special about the main board you picked against the ASUS?
- 8GB (2x DIMM's) does the i5/main board not support triple channel? If so wouldn't I be better off with 3x 2gb sticks for performance?
- The solid state drive, will this befit me when playing games? If so I would rather get a bigger drive and skip for sound card (for now) then add that in later when I get more funds...

Either way most appreciated!

1)that is large and nice case, in description even says fits full sized gpu's, looked it up on newegg and and the thing is a monster in size, you'll be fine

2)not sure what ur saying about that mobo v the asus other than the one he put is the right socket for the i5, while an am3 isn't

3)i don't think it does and the benefits would only show on a rediculous benchmark that has no real world value of any kind

4)ssd's only benefit what's on them and if you want more mem, it's rediculously expensive, i mean that in the most extreme way possible, and the soundcard just seems wasteful to me, why get one in the first place, i get it takes out some background stuff and all and you can go full on luxury surround sound stuff, but i just don't get it, but that's your decision.

-That case you choose is a great case,You will not have any issues fitting a 6950 in it.

-1155 Sandy Bridge uses Dual channel memory configurations. You would be better getting 2 x 2 GB for Dual Channel., 1366 uses Triple channel.

-Nothing special about that Gigabyte board vs the Asus one you choose,I just prefer Gigabyte boards because of how they look and have some really nice features plus ive never experienced any issues with them,The Asus one would be just as good. :)

-The Solid stare drive wont really benefit games all that much unless you actually install the game on the SSD,but because of the small capacity of the SSD allot of people just use it for the OS and general software.
I can tell you though having an SSD vs. a standard 7200 Rpm hard drive does really make the pc feel supercharged, Everythings usually instant and boot time is very quick.
I could never go back to a standard 7200 Rpm drive again.

You could also consider getting 2x standard HDDs and doing Raid 0 for extra performance.

Thanks Nevakonaza some good information and feedback there. I think I will amend the final list and post it a bit later on before I order the parts.
